Scientific Officer EATG - European AIDS Treatment Group

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Scientific Officer will support the development and strengthening of EATG activities (www.eatg.org) in the key area of Science and Research, via coordinating science-oriented projects where EATG is a partner organisation, and supporting the work of the European Community Advisory Board (ECAB) on HIV/AIDS.

Projects (50% of total workload)

The Scientific Officer will coordinate science-oriented projects where EATG is a partner organisation.

These projects are currently four:

  • One funded through the Innovative Medicines Initiative: EUPATI (40% of workload of SO)
  • Three funded by the DG Research of the European Commission: NEAT, CHAARM and ECRAN (10% of workload of SO)

In the management of these projects, the Scientific Officer will work closely with the appointed EATG project leaders, taskforces and partners.

The main tasks will involve:

  • Project Scientific Coordination and Implementation;
  • Project Evaluation;
  • Technical and Financial Reporting;
  • Liaison and networking with work package partners and collaborators for efficient and timely implementation of work plan activities;
  • Liaison with project coordinators on technical issues related to project management;
  • Updating and maintaining projects database (online and hard-copy);
  • Liaison with Executive Director on preparation and filing of contracts;
  • Liaison with Financial manager on coordination of budget and payments related to projects;
  • Ensuring that up-to-date information on projects is available for and disseminated to members and stakeholders (website update, conference reports, press release, annual reports etc.).

Support to the European Community Advisory Board (ECAB) (50% of total workload)

The Scientific Officer will support the work of the European Community Advisory Board (ECAB) on HIV/AIDS. ECAB is the working group of the EATG focused on science. It is a pan-European network of treatment advocates, many living with HIV, working together to end the epidemic by advancing research on HIV/AIDS, broadening access to treatment, and training/mentoring new advocates. ECAB aims to promote the harmonisation of good clinical practice, standard of care and access to the best available therapies and diagnostic tools throughout Europe.

The Scientific Officer will work closely with the ECAB Chair(s), the ECAB Steering Committee, the EATG Hepatitis consultant and support them in:

  • Developing the overall strategy and priorities of EATG in the field of HIV science and research;
  • Developing ECAB annual work plan, priorities and budget;
  • Organising ECAB meetings on HIV drug development and access in Europe (approx. 4 meetings of 2.5 days per year): liaising with pharmaceutical companies, preparing scientific agenda, overseeing logistics, ensuring reports and minutes are produced;
  • Organising meetings with external stakeholders on specific request (researchers, regulatory agencies, pharmaceutical companies, clinicians etc.): preparing scientific agenda, overseeing logistics, ensuring reports are produced;
  • Networking with similar bodies, peer organisations and international organisations;
  • Establishing and maintaining contacts with pharmaceutical industry;
  • Evaluating ECAB members’ needs and involvement on an on-going basis;
  • Organising trainings for ECAB members;
  • Assisting the Hepatitis consultant with the coordination of activities related to Hepatitis/HIV co-infection;
  • Supporting the work of company liaisons and thematic portfolios;
  • Liaising with EATG working groups and members representing the EATG in various scientific and research fora;
  • Coordinating and drafting ECAB annual activity report;
  • Participating in scientific meetings and other events as required, monitoring and analysis of developments and trends of HIV research, information gathering and dissemination (internally and externally);
  • Maintaining ECAB communication tools (email lists, extranet, web page) and ensuring that up to date information regarding ECAB work is posted on EATG’s website;
  • Liaising with Executive Director on preparation and filing of contracts related to ECAB;
  • Liaising with Financial manager on coordination of budget and payments related to ECAB.

Eligibility criteria:

Essential:

  • Minimum Master Degree level in biology, medical sciences, or pharmaceutical sciences; additional education/experience in public health a plus.
  • Good understanding of HIV and AIDS, particularly HIV treatment issues;
  • Experience (minimum 2 years) in the content-coordination and financial-management of science-oriented projects;
  • Experience in scientific project monitoring and evaluation;
  • Experience in scientific networks coordination;
  • Ability to effectively communicate and liaise with many different groups, communities and nationalities, and operate in a range of different cultural, social, economic and political environments;
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills;
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and spoken;
  • Ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines;
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise;
  • Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team;
  • Excellent self-organisation abilities;
  • Excellent computer skills;
  • Prepared to travel and occasional weekend work.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within a patient organisation as health research advocate;
  • Experience with DG Research and IMI funded projects;
  • Working knowledge of other European languages, both written and spoken.

Appointment and conditions of employment:

The successful candidate will receive a 2-year fixed contract (with possibility of an extension), subject to a 6-month probation period.

The salary scale: 2500-3200€ gross/month (depending on experience);
Location: EATG’s secretariat in Brussels, with occasional travel;
Start: As soon as possible.
