A volunteer placement is currently open in Uganda.

Employer: UCIPD School of Nursing
City, Country: Lira District, Uganda
Start date: February, 2013 or sooner
Length: 24 months

This placement is part of the VSO’s health programme. Uganda Christian Institute for Professional Development (UCIPD) School of Nursing was founded in 2009 and admitted the first students in 2010 with a mission to provide education opportunities for the disadvantaged students of Northern Uganda, especially in healthcare discipline. There is currently a shortage of qualified, experienced nursing tutors.

What does the role involve?

The main purpose of this placement is to support the UCIPD teaching team in providing more quality teaching and enhancing the learning experience of students. Coming from outside the country, you are also expected to offer a new knowledge. The role includes hands-on teaching on the aspects of nursing, assisting the teaching team to improve their skills, as well assisting the Principal and UCIPD Administrator in the registration process for the new intake.

Skills, qualifications and experience required

You’ll need to have at least diploma standard nursing qualification, and three years practical nursing experience and teaching experience. The school is newly established therefore it is important that you have an understanding and patience of working with limited resources in a growing institution as well as ability in dealing with students of a range of capacities and different working culture. A good inter-personal skill and ability to work independently and sometimes under pressure are essential. A knowledge or experience of working in a developing country will be an advantage.

And the rest...

Initially you will be placed in Lira town. However, in the future the school will move to a new site, which is currently under construction, 5 km outside the town proper. The capital city, Kampala, is five hours away by land. Lira has a high poverty level where 81% of population live on subsistence economy and the rest on cottage industry. Although the placement can be challenging, this is a chance to make a contribution to the disadvantaged students for a better education.

We’ll ask you to commit 24 months to make a sustainable contribution to development goals and in return we’ll provide you with invaluable training before your placement, a local living allowance, return flights, accommodation and insurance. When you return to your home country we’ll help you resettle and we’ll invite you to stay involved with us through campaigning, development awareness raising and fundraising.
