BBC Radio Scotland offers a mix of daytime speech programmes and evening music and reaches a million listeners every week. News and topical programmes form the main spine of the morning schedule and high-profile presenters include Kaye Adams, Fred MacAulay and John Beattie. The Topical & Events team is currently managed by the Managing Editor, Radio Scotland, who will be taking up new duties in relation to BBC Scotland’s coverage of the Commonwealth Games in 2014. As a consequence we need an experienced programme editor, senior producer or senior broadcast journalist to act as Editor for the staff in Topical & Events
The Editor will provide creative and managerial leadership to the team behind BBC Radio Scotland’s mid–morning programmes; Call Kaye and MacAulay & Co. That team comprises Senior Content Producers, Content Producers and Content Assistants who work across both programmes. The Editor, Topical & Events will be a member of the Radio Management Group at BBC Scotland and will have regular contact with the Head of Radio and with colleagues such as Editor, Music and Editor, Speech Programmes (based in Edinburgh). On occasion, the Editors will be asked to deputise for each other or for the Head of Radio.
The successful candidate with have an informed understanding of the interests, preferences and concerns of different audiences for BBC Radio Scotland, highly developed interpersonal skills evidenced by achievement in leading and managing creative teams and the ability to demonstrate first class editorial judgement across a range of output. A developed understanding of Scotland’s culture, politics, and society and of the current political and constitutional debate is desirable.
