Department

BBC Future Media’s ambition is to create the most valued open digital media services in the world. We want to transform the BBC for an interactive, on-demand world and find new ways of reaching audiences wherever they are, with new formats across PC, TV and mobile devices. We must engage with – and empower – audiences in new, innovative ways, to create a new kind of digital organisation and a broadband Britain.

Role

We are looking for an exceptional Development Lead with a proven technical web development background, who is excited by the prospect of leading a world-class team of web developers

You will have a strong allegiance to both agile methodologies and test-driven development practices with a firm emphasis on delivering quality software. You will be expected to evangelise TDD, BDD and continuous delivery within your team. You are a clear communicator and a strong leader who understands what is required to build and deliver household name services.

You will be expected to take responsibility for the technical direction and delivery of Future Media Childrens projects and the day-to-day line management of a multi-disciplined team of software engineers enabling BBC Future Media to meet its business requirements.

This is a very exciting time to join the team as you will be working on the responsive rebuild of the CBeebies / CBBC websites

Requirements

  • Take ownership for the technical delivery of a project work stream, making best use of the team resources and available technologies to deliver the best possible results.
  • Provide technical direction on projects and expertise in relevant technologies and specialist knowledge in your own area to the team
  • Produce and contribute to documentation (e.g. product backlogs, specifications) for both internal and external audiences
  • Advise, recommend and manage the introduction of new technology and practices
  • Advise on strategic technology issues (e.g. re-usable software designs and patterns, writing proposals for the acquisition of new equipment and software engineering tools)
  • Identify potential areas of risk and suggest mitigating actions
  • Scope new projects and proposals, i.e. given high level requirements, suggest possible software solutions, identify components/tasks, and provide estimates, whilst being sensitive to business requirements
  • Ensure projects deliver documented functionality and quality within agreed effort and time constraints
  • Be a champion for software quality; leading teams in developing software of a high standard that are maintainable, robust, resilient and performant.
  • Build relationships with other development teams and assist the integration of business processes and software engineering activity across the organisation
  • Mentor other staff on technology, best practice, and BBC standards and guidelines
  • Assist with the development of relevant standards and guidelines.
  • Liaise with internal clients on the scope and specification of projects
  • Ensure operational issues are considered and planned for when major new products, releases or versions are rolled out
