The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is a unique and leading inter-university research centre specialized in the field of International and European law. Its core activities of fundamental and applied research, postgraduate education (including PhD training), document delivery, knowledge dissemination and valorization are predominantly carried out on and from its premises in The Hague, for its diverse population of stakeholders at national and international levels.
Each research programme has its own governance structure and is managed by an Academic Coordinator, who plays a significant role in making a success of this inter-university research cooperation. The Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER), http://www.cleer.eu is one such inter-university research programme. Since its inception in 2008, CLEER has become an authoritative interface between academia and practice, in EU external relations law. It serves as one of the leading fora for debate on the role of the EU in the world. It comprises a growing network of partner institutions throughout Europe. The T.M.C. Asser Instituut has a vacancy for a full-time, temporary position of a Senior Researcher in EU law and Academic Programme Coordinator (Covering Maternity Leave).

Job Description

We offer the position of full-time (38 hours per week) senior researcher for a maximum period of one year. The coordination of CLEER will take place during the first 6 months of this appointment in addition to the other described tasks. You will become a member of the institute’s research staff, a multinational and interdisciplinary group of scholars clustered in four distinctive inter-university research programmes. You will have the opportunity to conduct post-doctoral research as part of CLEER, and specialize in the area of EU external relations law.

Specific responsibilities include the following

  • You will co-ordinate and manage the inter-university research programme embodied by CLEER under the supervision of the Governing Board of CLEER;
  • You will manage the content of the website of CLEER, edit and circulate the weekly CLEER News service and process manuscripts for the Centre’s Working Papers series;
  • You will organise events related to the activities of CLEER;
  • You will be expected to acquire and carry out contract research, consultancy and trainings;
  • You will maintain and develop an international network of EU law and other experts;
  • You will be expected, where possible and appropriate, to publish and give presentations on your subject specific field.

Qualifications

  • You are a legal scholar and have recently defended your PhD;
  • You have a specific research focus on EU external relations law and have general knowledge in the main areas of EU law;
  • You have a proven track record in academic research and substantive teaching experience in the above-mentioned domains;
  • You are competent in the acquisition and implementation of training and consultancy activities;
  • You have experience in acquiring and carrying out second and/or third money stream funded projects;
  • You have an excellent command of English. Knowledge of Dutch is appreciated;
  • You have excellent reporting, writing and presentation skills;
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with confidence, clearly, effectively and concisely;
  • You have a collaborative and supportive approach to teamwork;
  • You are capable of performing well under the stress of fixed deadlines.

Conditions

  • Temporary employment for 1 year (covering maternity leave);
  • Up to 1 fte (38 hours per week);
  • Salary scale: 11 according to the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (VSNU);
  • Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience and knowledge with a maximum of € 4.418, gross per month based on a full time equivalent;
  • The T.M.C. Asser Instituut is affiliated with the University of Amsterdam and the conditions of employment of the university are applicable.
