Overview

Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), one of Scotland’s largest universities, is seeking a founding Dean, Executive Education for its newly launched New York Center. GCU is the first British university to establish a base in Manhattan. The NY Center is the University’s latest initiative in realizing its vision to become a globally networked university with programs in every region of the world aligned with GCU’s mission to deliver access for students, excellence in research for the professions and a commitment to the ‘common good’.



The inaugural Dean will report to and work closely with the Vice President, GCU New York, Cara Smyth, a former director of Burberry and Jil Sander and will be accountable both to Vice President Smyth and Vice Chancellor Pamela Gillies, CBE. S/he will partner with colleagues in Glasgow and London primarily in the School for Business and Society and the School for Engineering and Health to create, lead and deliver Master’s and certificate programs aligned with GCU’s highly-successful executive education programs, which include the business of fashion, international brand strategy and sustainability, responsible leadership and global talent management, and TV fiction writing and finance. GCU envisions the New York Center to be recognized as the primary convenor of cutting edge lectures and programs that address the most pressing issues facing globally responsible and ethical management today.



Based in the heart of Scotland’s largest city GCU traces its origins back to 1875 and was founded to further the common good by engaging in strong community projects that provide economic and social benefit to the communities it serves. Today it is a centre of educational excellence that provides award-winning student support, professionally-focused programmes and outstanding industry links making it one of the leading modern higher education institutions in the UK. As one of Scotland’s most dynamic and forward looking universities, it blends strong local and regional partnerships with national and international links to create successful global graduates and citizens and is recognized by a host of internationally-renowned figures, including the world thought leader in social business and anti-poverty campaigner, Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, who was installed as the University’s Chancellor in October 2012.


GCU is seeking a professional with a deep commitment to executive education at the post baccalaureate level and a successful track record delivering a wide range of programs, including professional outreach and corporate specific programs that meet the needs of a responsible private sector by integrating sustainability, impact investing, social finance and ethical business practices. The successful candidate will have a reputation for fostering a culture of enterprise and entrepreneurialism and creating educational programs that marry theory and practice and successfully attract students eager to learn to transform good intentions into lasting change. S/he will be a visionary leader known for pioneering new teaching methods that blend traditional instructional wisdom with students’ new expectations inspired by today’s continually evolving, multi-platform information technology.
