Programme Director: Research in Development Economics
The Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) is looking to recruit an outstanding and experienced economist to manage our development policy research team, EDePo (the Centre for the Evaluation of Development Policy). The successful applicant will provide intellectual leadership and manage a team of excellent economists conducting first class research in development economics.
IFS is Europe’s leading centre of microeconomic policy research. It is a politically independent registered charity aiming to bridge the gap between policymakers and academics. The Centre for the Evaluation of Development Policy is a research centre based at IFS. It aims to promote best practice in the design, conduct and evaluation of development interventions and policy reforms in developing countries.
The successful candidate should have a proven academic record in development economics (or in a related research area such as human capital formation) and experience of research, either in academia or a development policy or consultancy role. He or she will be able to lead and participate in top quality economic research, developing ideas, managing projects involving a number of international partners, raising funding and disseminating research findings to a diverse audience. Researchers are routinely and actively engaged in data collection efforts which often include original and innovative instruments. The research programme involves projects in a number of countries, including in Latin America, Africa and Asia, with opportunities for travel and to work with a wide range of international partners.
The Programme Director will manage and develop a team of six economists and four external research fellows. This will be with the support and intellectual input of Professor Orazio Attanasio. They will contribute to the overall smooth running of IFS and take a role in the intellectual leadership of the Institute as a whole.
The previous holder of the post has worked at the Institute for 14 years and is now leaving to take up a Chair at the Institute of Education, University of London.
The deadline to receive applications is Thursday 3 October 2013.
