Job Summary

​Cardno TEC, Inc. is currently recruiting for a Marine Mammal Ecologist/Regulatory Specialist in our San Diego, CA location. The successful candidate will rigorously apply knowledge and understanding of scientific principles, natural resources/systems, and environmental regulations to assist federal, state, local, and private interests in environmental planning, permitting, and compliance projects.  This position requires strong data collection/research abilities, excellent analytical and writing skills, and resourceful problem-solving talents.  Desirable traits include the confidence to interact directly with clients and other subject matter experts, as well as the humility and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative team environment.

Key Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position.   • Work a part-time schedule with the potential for (short-term) travel and field assignments.
  • Apply professional competence with specialized knowledge of physical and/or natural sciences, including occasional field surveys.
  • Participate in preparation of environmental planning, permitting, and regulatory compliance documents (e.g., Biological Assessments), including: data collection, writing document sections, preparing impact analyses, developing mitigation measures, interacting with regulatory staff, and designing and implementing monitoring plans.

Other Requirements

Minimum Qualifications Required:
  • MS degree with an emphasis in biology/ecology
  • Significant work experience focused on marine mammals and federal agency compliance with the MMPA
  • Working knowledge of NEPA, MMPA, and related environmental laws and compliance requirements
  • Excellent written, oral, and computer skills
  • Proficiency working with GPS units
  • Ability to facilitate transfer of field data to GIS database
  • Proven technical writing skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a team environment across a muti-site organization
  • Be a motivated self-starter
  • Ability to exercise professional discretion and judgment
  • Ability to travel as required
Experience Required:
  • Requires 10+ years of experience in marine biology/ecology, with a primary emphasis on marine mammals and regulatory compliance with the Marine Mammal Protection Act.

  • Some heavy lifting and considerable moving of equipment required
