Economist

We wish to appoint an agricultural or environmental economist into our Policy and Economics team to contribute to the extensive programme of policy research and consultancy.  The team works with scientific and technical colleagues across a range of sectors, predominantly, although not exclusively, land, food, energy and environment sectors, to provide high level policy advice, research and evaluation.
The successful applicant will contribute to winning and delivery of profitable research and consultancy assignments as part of a team, and in so doing to build long term relationships with colleagues and clients. The main focus of the work will be sustainable and competitive agriculture. Client organisations include the European Commission, UK and devolved government departments, public agencies, local authorities and the private sector.
The post is expected to be based at our Leeds office but other office locations would be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver policy and economics research and consultancy work as part of the sustainable food and farming team.
  • Provide expert input to colleagues in the sustainable food and farming team and wider ADAS.
  • Manage projects to ensure they are delivered on time, within budget and to the required standard
  • Contribute to writing effective tender bids and proposals to expand the work of the policy and economics group.
  • Raise profile of policy and economics group with clients and colleagues
Capabilities
Applicants should be able to:
  • Apply economic methods to a broad range of policy areas to inform policy development, support options analysis and evaluate policy.
  • Use appropriate survey approaches and methodologies, including statistical software and analysis to provide robust evidence on attitudes to and impacts of public programmes and initiatives.
  • Present project findings and tenders in a range of formats appropriate for the audience including written reports and presentations.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the policy environment in which ADAS research and consultancy operates, notably in areas such as: agriculture and food production, sustainable development, renewable energy and climate change, ecosystem services and rural affairs.
  • Work well under pressure and in multi-disciplinary teams
  • Effectively organise own time and that of others to meet project deadlines, some of which will be at short notice.
  • Develop new business through tendering, networking and building relationships with clients to contribute to a growing portfolio of ADAS policy and economics work.
