Teach For China takes a unique approach to eliminating educational inequity by enlisting China and the US's most promising future leaders in the effort. Teach For China recruits, selects, trains, and supports outstanding US and Chinese graduates to work side-by-side to deliver an excellent education in high poverty and rural Chinese communities. In the short term, Teach For China's Fellows are placed in full-time, two-year teaching commitments at under-resourced schools, where they meet the pressing need for exceptional educators. In the long term, Teach For China supports its alumni – equipped with the experience, conviction, and insight that comes from leading children to fulfill their potential – to be a force for change, working from across sectors to expand educational opportunity.
Teach For China was established in 2008 and placed its first cohort of 20 Fellows in 2009. This year, Teach For China will grow to 500 Fellows, including 80 US Fellows, serving in Yunnan and Guangdong with 85 staff members across six main offices.
Teach For China is a part of the global network, Teach For All, that is comprised of 35+ world-wide organizations all working to tackle educational inequality in their countries.
Position Summary
The Director of US Recruiting and University Relations is charged with ensuring that Teach For China attracts top caliber US Fellows with the entrepreneurship and leadership needed to have a dramatic impact on students and communities during the fellowship and more broadly on the Chinese education system as alumni. In this highly strategic role, the Director will set the vision, plan the strategy, and effectively manage the execution for Teach For China's recruitment efforts, marketing, and brand development in the USA. The Director will play a pivotal role in building lasting strategic external partnerships to ensure that Teach For China is able to recruit and develop the most promising cross-cultural leaders from US universities.
Responsibilities
  • Set the goals, key performance indicators, strategy, and execution plan for US recruitment, selections, and matriculation in alignment with Teach For China's overall organizational strategy and goals
  • Manage a team to effectively execute against US recruitment priorities, including:
    • Attracting a diverse range of strong candidates to apply for the fellowship
    • Selecting top caliber candidates with the entrepreneurship and leadership qualities necessary to drive significant impact as Fellows and alumni
    • Matriculating selected candidates into the fellowship with the appropriate expectations and preparation to begin the fellowship
    • Building a strong Teach For China brand and generating large-scale and lasting interest across target and non-target US campuses as a top program for US graduates to work in China
  • Coach and develop US recruitment team members and ensure growth against professional development goals
  • Leverage external relationships and resources to strengthen recruitment results, including building and maintaining strategic partnerships and relationships with US universities, organizations, and individuals; and collaborating with US-based Teach For China alumni
  • Collaborate closely across other departments to ensure alignment with overall Teach For China goals. In particular, collaborate closely with Chinese Recruitment team on overseas Chinese recruitment, regional teams, and marketing.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a team toward ambitious outcomes; coach and develop others; and inspire committed and positive action toward individual and organizational goals
  • Exceptional inter-personal and public speaking skills, and the ability to interact with and inspire diverse audiences
  • Experience with managing, developing, and cultivating relationships with external partners and networks in order to achieve results
  • Comfort working with databases and analyzing data to draw accurate conclusions
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-culturally preferred
  • Operates with urgency and sense of possibility to achieve ambitious, measurable results
  • Makes informed, timely decisions and uses sound judgment to prioritize actions
  • Fluency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook (exceptionally strong Excel skills an asset)
  • Willingness to travel extensively and work on evenings and weekends, as required
Experience Required
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years management experience achieving ambitious outcomes
  • Minimum of 2 years working in recruitment
  • Experience within the Teach For All network as a participant and/or staff member strongly preferred
  • Experience living/working in China a plus
