OVERVIEW:
Fairtrade is an alternative approach to conventional trade and is based on a partnership between producers and consumers. Fairtrade offers producers a better deal and improved terms of trade. This allows them the opportunity to improve their lives and plan for their future. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to reduce poverty through their everyday shopping. Fairtrade International (FLO) is the international non-profit, multi stakeholder body that is responsible for the strategic direction of Fairtrade, sets Fairtrade standards and supports producers.
The Programmes unit develops specialist thematic programmes required to deepen the impact of Fairtrade‘s work on sustainable development and human rights, and mainstream these programmes across all relevant areas of Fairtrade‘s work.
OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE:
  • The Project Manager, Workers’ Rights and Trade Union Relations will develop and implement programmes and instruments for international development in the area of workers’ rights and trade union relations. Special focus will be given to social dialogue, training and capacity building, dispute resolution, occupational health and safety, decent livelihoods and fundamental rights and freedoms. The Project Manager will report to the International Development Director and will receive content supervision from the Senior Advisor, Workers’ Rights and Trade Union Relations.
PRINCIPAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Co-design and deliver programmes to strengthen the protection of workers’ rights and empower workers to exercise those rights, both globally and in selected regions;
  • Develop projects and programmes assignment and ensure their implementation on time and budget;
  • Develop tools and instruments to implement Fairtrade’s Global Hired Labour Strategy, including training materials;
  • Manage consultancy agreements and monitoring deliverables;
  • Develop, implement and monitor project plans against clear deliverables in line with internal methodology;
  • Collaborating with local trade unions, NGOs and other potential partners specialised in workers’ rights and development;
  • Collect and analyse labour data of workers in the Fairtrade system around the world to feed into strategy development;
  • Collaborating with other units within Fairtrade International, for instance Standards, Communication and Fundraising;
  • Work in collaboration with field and fundraising staff to design projects for funding;
  • Provide input for monitoring budgets and donor reports Other tasks requested by the Senior Advisor, Workers’ Rights and Trade Union Relations;
  • Substitute the Senior Advisor, Workers’ Rights and Trade Union Relations in his absence.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Education
  • Graduate degree in Industrial Relations, Labour Studies, Human Rights, International Development or International Law or comparable qualifications.
Experience
  • At least three years of operational experience in workers’ rights issues dealing with workers, trade union representatives and employers in the context of developing and emerging countries and impact reporting.
Skills and personal qualities
  • Strong understanding of workers’ rights issues in global supply chains;
  • Strong understanding of international development, including participatory development and project cycle management;
  • Extraordinary focus on delivery;
  • Self-starter;
  • Ability to work independently, able to work in a team Assertive and diplomatic;
  • Principled and pragmatic;
  • Fluency in English and Spanish, preferably advanced in French;
  • Sense of humour.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS:
  • This is a full-time position;
  • An initial one-year contract is offered. It is envisaged that the contract will be renewable after the initial one year period;
  • Location is at Fairtrade International offices in Bonn, Germany;
  • The office language is English;
  • Salary group VIa as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Wholesale and Foreign Trade Industries for North Rhine Westphalia and Fairtrade International Company Agreement on wages and salaries plus an attractive benefit package;
  • Starting date: as soon as possible;
  • 30 days of holidays per year.
