Product Development Quality Engineer

Description

We are seeking a long term commitment from an exceptional professional to join the operations and engineering as Product Development Quality Engineer (PDQE).The PDQE represents the quality assurance function on product development process from early design stages to production implementation. He is responsible for developing and executing the quality plan for each product development stage and ensures that product development projects are conducted in compliance with internal, customer, and regulatory requirements. The role will require a close working relationship with the Technical, Operations Teams and other key staff. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Product Development

  1. Review new and modified product designs and process documentation for quality attributes, including manufacturability, serviceability, testability, reliability, and conformance to product and quality system requirements.
  2. Ensure product compliance to internal, customer and regulatory requirements.
  3. Manage the development and maintenance of product risk management files.
  4. Oversee design verification testing, and leads test method assessment and validation activities.
  5. Develop requirements for first article inspection, incoming and in-process inspections, and lot release testing, including sampling strategy and test methods.
  6. Conduct failure investigations to analyse internal system or process failures, and implement corrective and preventive action.
  7. Participate in component and service supplier evaluation, including supplier audits.
  8. Guide product development teams on efficient and effective application of design controls.
  9. Assist launch engineers in preparing Process Flow Diagrams, DFMEA, PFMEA, Corrective/Preventive Actions and process trouble shooting and improvements
  10. Prepare documentation for inspection/testing procedures.
  11. Coordinate customer concern resolutions.
  12. Establish and maintains communication between customer and trouble owner.
  13. Provide monthly feedback to Engineering and other Quality teams.
  14. Lead Quality Improvement with supplier and Mobius manufacturing facilities to improve quality.
  15. Understand and apply failure mode avoidance methods including Quality History, Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs), and Design Verification Plan.
  16. Establish product guidelines and best practices to support product development efforts
  17. Support product and process cost reduction activity or improvement initiatives throughout product lifecycle.
  18. Support R&D group to ensure manufacturability, quality and cost-efficiency of on-going design and engineering work.
  19. Support Operations group to identify, evaluate and select suppliers and contract manufacturers to deliver the production of cost-effective vehicle parts and subassemblies.

Project Management

  1. Take ownership of projects; plan milestones, timelines, budgets, resources and identify potential risks to deliver supply chain aspects within agreed completion dates.
  2. Be proactive regarding task completion and periodically advise wider team on project status, timing, resources, issues, and ability to deliver on-time with excellence.
  3. Ensure adherence and compliance to general automotive industry production standards and best practices; maintain structured and versioned data outputs daily and backup data weekly.
  4. Work as an active member of the team, ensure effective communication between colleagues and positively contribute regularly to meetings and briefings.

Qualifications

An ideal candidate should combine outstanding technical skills in engineering and operations management with excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team. They should possess a strong skill set in leading multi-function teams, defining operations strategy and identifying continuous improvement opportunities along with experience in managing global suppliers, production line configurations and quality engineering processes - within the automotive industry.

Required

  • 5+ years related experience in quality engineering, mechanical engineering, production line operations – preferably with a major automotive company
  • Proficient in quality analysis tools such as 8D, SPC, PFMEA
  • Exceptional leadership and clear sense of direction
  • Extreme patience and a good sense of humour
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build strong rapport with others
  • Exceptional integrity and a strong sense of ethics
  • Exceptional persistence and endurance to overcome significant challenges
  • Ability to manage difficult suppliers and resolve disputes while preserving relationships with suppliers and internal staff

  • Exceptional analytical skills with regards to logistics analysis, data manipulation, and the ability to create information from data
  • Ability to effectively communicate timelines and project progress with both internal and external management teams
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems and components
  • Strong problem solving skills with ability to teach basic problem solving techniques and facilitate problem solving team events
  • Experience in developing part certification processes and vendor quality measures
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication based quality control methods, tools and techniques
  • Strong engineering analysis skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Masters degree (or higher) in Quality Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research or similar
  • 5+ years related experience in quality engineering, mechanical engineering, production line operations – preferably with a major automotive company
  • Fluency in Kiswahili (the national language of Kenya)
