Finance & Extractives Research Intern

Location : Living Planet Centre - Woking
Closing date : 07/09/2014
Salary : Minimum wage
Employment type : Intern
WWF is at the heart of global efforts to address the world’s most important environmental challenges. We work with communities, businesses and governments in over 100 countries to help people and nature thrive. Together, we’re safeguarding the natural world, tackling dangerous climate change and enabling people to use only their fair share of natural resources. With over fifty years’ experience our belief in a better future grows stronger by the day.
WWF-UK have subscribed to the global SNL Mines and Metals database which provides the opportunity for extensive research into the mining industry and its financing. During the WWF-UK extractives strategy development it was identified that WWF has very poor intelligence on new mining exploration and developments in our priority places. This means that we often find out about mining developments when all the decisions have been made. This puts us into a reactive rather than pro-active and constructive position of influence. To improve on this we need to understand much better the spatial distribution of new licences and the potential overlap with conservation priority and sensitive areas linking in with the work that the WWF Norway/WWF UK/ WWF Africa African Land-use and Early Warning systems (ALES) project is doing. With London being a centre of mining finance we also want to have better information on London based or listed companies and their investors in our priority regions. This will enable us to identify potential entry points and areas of influence.
What’s the purpose of this role?
The purpose of this role is to conduct extractives related research using the SNL Mines and Minerals database to improve our understanding of  mining licencing and financing  particularly through LSE in WWF-UKs priority places. The intern will investigate the following initial research questions:
1.Identify all London listed companies with mining licences in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique by type of licence.
2.In turn, identify the level of investment and main investors in these companies
3.List the ones that are overlapping with Protected  Areas and if possible other conservation sensitive areas (depending on data availability)
At the end of the internship the intern is expected to deliver:

1. Final Report of research findings.
2. Short presentation of main investment trends in mining in E Africa to  Finance & Extractives and East Africa team.
3. Inform and train members of the F&E team for optimum use and navigation on the database

What skills, knowledge and experience are needed?

Strong research and computational skills
Ability to work independently and seek help as required

Experience:
Work or volunteering experience in related field desired.

Qualification:
Master level degree in conservation or finance related degree

This is a 13 week internship, paid at minimum wage.
Closing Date: 7 September 2014
