Finance / Admin Officer

The International News Safety Institute (INSI) is a global network of journalists and news organisations that provides real time, real life safety information, training and expert advice for journalists, freelancers, fixers and news crews.
We are looking for an individual to be based in our Canary Wharf, London headquarters to oversee the day-to-day operation of INSI’s finances and administration and to ensure the smooth running of our finance department.
Key responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain computerised accounting systems
  • Undertake detailed financial analysis of projects and closely monitor budgets against project progress and expenditure
  • Ensure that project financial operations are in compliance with all donor and INSI policies and procedures
  • Input records of income and expenditure on the accounting system and maintain paper records, including raising invoices
  • Prepare payments and organise supporting documentation
  • Manage and record petty cash
  • Prepare regular financial reports including reports for Companies House, funders, the management team and the board of trustees
  • Assist with audits and liaise with accountants
  • Provide financial information for funding applications
  • Assist the director and project management team with a wide range of administrative duties
Key Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting/finance or equivalent, or a recognised accountancy qualification
  • Significant experience working in a finance environment, preferably in the voluntary/charity sector
  • Knowledge of governance and accounting requirements of voluntary sector organisations including Charity Commission and Companies House requirements.
  • Experience reporting to international donors including the UK and US governments
  • Experience handling petty cash, payroll and invoicing
  • A good level of general knowledge and awareness of topical financial issues
  • Proven understanding of accounting concepts
  • Ability to prepare or analyse and verify routine financial documents, statements, and verify routine financial documents, statements and reports
  • High level of computer literacy, experience using spreadsheets and accounting software
  • Experience working with and managing multiple budgets
  • Experience carrying out general administrative tasks
  • Ability to work on own initiative and manage own workload
