Conflict and Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy Adviser

Save the Children’s Advocacy Department leads the development and implementation of advocacy strategies to achieve policy and political change at the highest level, manages Save the Children’s advocacy engagement with the UK government, international institutions and the private sector, provides policy intelligence to the wider organisation and forges alliances with key opinion-makers in the UK and globally. Through humanitarian advocacy, Save the Children works to influence national and international policies that impact on children affected by sudden-onset emergencies and protracted humanitarian crises.
About the Role
To implement advocacy strategies on crisis situations around the world and on thematic policy priorities (such as children and armed conflict), engaging and influencing external partners and targets, and working closely with colleagues across the Save the Children movement.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Developing and adapting our policy positions, strategies and tactics in order to influence policy and practice affecting children in crises
  • Representing Save the Children effectively to external contacts, including partners and advocacy targets
  • Supporting and improving the organisation’s thinking on humanitarian and conflict issues
  • Building strong and collaborative relationships with a wide range of internal colleagues, including in our country programmes, other Save the Children members, and media, campaigns and communications colleagues
  • Supporting the wider work of the Conflict and Humanitarian Policy and Advocacy team as required
You will have:
  • Demonstrable understanding and experience of humanitarian response and/or policy issues
  • Experience of NGO advocacy, liaising with different types of stakeholders (e.g. UN, governments), with a good understanding of the external advocacy environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to summarise complex data and policy ideas
  • A track record of achieving results
  • Ability to work quickly and flexibly under pressure, as well as to prioritise with large amounts of work
  • Willingness to travel at short notice, including to high-risk and uncomfortable locations, for a maximum of three months at a time.
What we offer
In return we offer a negotiable salary of £34,000 - £39,000 per annum + pension, structured career development, travel and the opportunity to join a team at the leading edge of humanitarian advocacy.
This is a 9 month fixed term contract position with the possibility of extension; ideally starting asap.
