The African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) is a pan-African network of centres of excellence for postgraduate training, research and public engagement in mathematical sciences. Its mission is to enable Africa's brightest students to flourish as independent thinkers, problem solvers and innovators capable of propelling Africa's future scientific, educational and economic self-sufficiency. The first AIMS centre opened in Cape Town, South Africa in 2003; since 2011, AIMS has opened additional centres in Senegal, Ghana, Cameroon and Tanzania. The goal of the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI) is to build a Pan African network of 15 centres of excellence across the continent by 2023.

The highlight of AIMS education, a ten-month structured Master’s Programme in Mathematical Sciences, trains approximately 50 top African students at each campus every year, preparing them for leadership careers. Following the success of the AIMS centers, the AIMS Next Einstein Initiative (AIMS-NEI, www.nexteinstein.org) is launching a Mathematics Teacher Training Program (TTP) in Cameroon, with the Master Card Foundation. The TTP’s objective is to reinforce the pedagogic capacities of math teachers in secondary and high schools, thereby enhancing the quality of secondary school math education in both the Francophone and Anglophone educational sub-systems in Cameroon.

This is a pilot Program for the AIMS network with significant opportunity for scale-up and to distinguish AIMS as an innovative learning institution that consistently provides cutting edge approaches to high quality mathematics education.

****Pedagogic Advisor (Yaoundé, Cameroon)****

Reporting to the Director, Teacher Training Program (TTP), the Pedagogic Advisor will contribute to all the activities of the Programme, including advocacy and awareness, and will assist and advise the Director on any subject (pedagogic) needed for the success of the Programme.

The incumbent will contribute to design of the TTP curricula, prepare training materials for TTP courses and assist in delivering TTP courses. He / She will support trainees by ensuring they understand the material during training, tutorials, practice and other sessions; assisting them in designing teaching kits and teaching resources; and proofreading and correcting their written work, including projects, teaching kits and resources.

The Pedagogic Advisor will identify, evaluate and classify trainees and produced resources, as well as prepare and tutor distance learning. He / She will also disseminate resources and best practices through seminars, lectures and tutorials, as well as outside of the academic environment.

Finally, this role will help maintain and improve the TTP course management systems and online presence, while also following up and producing reports on trainees’ progress and course evaluations.

Do you have what we need?

• Qualified mathematics secondary school teacher.
• DIPES 2 or 2nd Grade HTTC diploma in mathematics or statistics or an equivalent diploma.
• Good knowledge of both Francophone and Anglophone educational subsystems in Cameroon.
• Fluent in English (for the Anglophone position) or French (for the Francophone position) and good knowledge of the other language.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of teaching experience, and minimum of five (5) years of experience supervising mathematics teaching activities.
• Excellent communication and analytical skills and ability to think independently.
• Strong commitment to the AIMS mission.
• Keen interests in mathematics and teaching.
• Working knowledge of use of ICT for teaching mathematics, and use of distance education platforms (designing courses, management, etc.).
• Enthusiasm to work in a culturally diverse organization, and ability to work with a diverse range of trainees and trainers (lecturers, teachers, tutors and administrators) for the successful operation of the program.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Internet applications (Skype, Google Apps).
• Travel within and out of Africa, for periodic extended in-country stays of up to 8 weeks.
