The WWF Global Arctic Programme (GAP) is one of the key regional programmes within the WWF network. The GAP leads the WWF Network, WWF National Offices in Arctic states, and other interested WWF offices in conservation efforts in the Arctic.  The GAP is hosted by, and headquartered at, WWF-Canada in Ottawa.


Position Description:

The Senior Specialist, Responsible Development is tasked with elements of development, delivery and implementation of the WWF vision for the future sustainable development of the Arctic. The overall goal is to eliminate and/or mitigate immediate threats associated with vulnerable and valuable Arctic areas, species, and ecosystem services. This work will be undertaken in close collaboration with WWF national offices, WWF network practices, and external partners. This role is responsible for advancing the programme in designing, coordinating, and implementing specific activities to achieve WWF Arctic Strategic Plan objectives on responsible development (including objectives on financial systems for Arctic sustainable development and responsible industrial use of the Arctic).

Major Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the design, development and implementation of WWF’s vision for the Arctic sustainable development future and corresponding elements of the WWF Global Arctic Programme (GAP) strategy.
  • Lead implementation of specific elements of the WWF Arctic Strategic Plan in particular on oil and gas and shipping as agreed with and delegated by Head, Arctic Responsible Development and in cooperation with GAP contractors.
  • Develop effective collaboration with WWF national offices and other WWF units (within the scope of the Senior Specialist role) to ensure achievement of goals under responsibility within the WWF Arctic Strategic Plan and to ensure implementation plans are mutually supportive and integrated.
  • Maintain strategic overview of elements under responsibility and keep abreast of new trends, including in investment and financial sectors, and emerging opportunities for WWF.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of strategic partnerships, working relationships and alliances with international, national, and regional stakeholders including Indigenous Peoples organizations, conservation groups, industry and governments.
  • Design relevant messages, positions, and other materials in consultation with communications lead and Head, Arctic Responsible Development.
  • Provide technical and policy advice to field and policy staff and to the broader WWF Network, as required, and be active member of relevant Network Practices.
  • Identify new sources of funding and pursue relationships with new donors in coordination with Head, Arctic Responsible Development, GAP Director and fundraising colleagues.
  • Develop fundraising proposals and liaise with relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide for monitoring and reporting on progress towards achieving the goals of the responsible development agenda within the WWF Arctic Strategic Plan according to WWF operational protocols and standards.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or PhD in a relevant discipline.
  • At least 7 years post-graduation work experience in a position directly relating to development, financial institutions, industry, conservation or advocacy in the Arctic.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Arctic development context and challenges, including key sectors (finance, insurance, oil and gas, energy, fishing and shipping).
  • Understanding of the ecosystem services concept and knowledge of key approaches.
  • Experience and understanding of policy work and demonstrated ability to do advocacy.
  • Excellent leadership, management, motivational, coordination and interpersonal skills, including experience working in virtual / dispersed teams.
  • Proven ability to execute plans and deliver on agreed objectives. 
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and strategic thinking skills coupled with an outcome, delivery-oriented approach.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop positive relationships with all stakeholders involved in Arctic development discussions.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a media spokesperson.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation and communication skills, rigor, and ability to translate technical and scientific information for a non-technical audience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, knowledge of another Arctic language is an asset.
  • Capacity and willingness to travel and to be able to work in Arctic regions when required.
Other Information:
  • This is a full-time, two-year term position with possibility of renewal.
  • This position will be located in our Ottawa office or in a WWF national office outside of Canada depending on the suitability of the successful candidate.
  • There will be international travel as part of this role.
