University Academic Fellow in Wireless Communications Networks
Wireless communications networks are at the very heart of our future digital society, with tremendous impact in areas such as assisted living, mobile health, robotics, transport, smart cities, energy systems and the creative arts. The Communications Networks group at Leeds is one of the leading research groups in the world and is particularly well-known for its work in the Green Networks efficiency consortium, GreenTouch – which has over 50 member organisations (industrial and academic). The group is led by Prof. Elmirghani, recognised as an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer 2013-2016, with over 30 invited and key note talks at world premier events in this area over the past 3 years.
You will develop new research avenues in Cloud and Big Data Networks and Networked Robotics, collaborating widely across the campus with Computing, Mechanical Engineering, Medicine, Transport Studies and others, plus more widely across the UK and internationally (for example with MIT, Stanford, Ottawa, Melbourne). In order to pursue new research avenues such as network infrastructure and cloud networks that can support Big Data, where the Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to connect over 600 billion devices within a 20 year time frame, you will have key skills in network layer design tools including specifically queuing theory, Markov chains and mixed integer linear programming optimisation. This activity will benefit from a circa £1.2M of recent equipment investment as well as the support of all the major telecomms and media companies, such as Cisco, Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent, Huawei, Ericsson; Operators: BT, O2, Vodafone, China Mobile, Swiss Com; BBC, Google, Facebook, JANET, NHS, UK cities, Rolls Royce and others.
