THE NATURE CONSERVANCY CHIEF PHILANTHROPY OFFICER

The Nature Conservancy is the world's leading private conservation organization, working in 35 countries around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The Conservancy has protected more than 119 million acres, 5,000 miles of rivers, and over 100 different marine areas.

The Conservancy manages one of the most effective private philanthropic organizations in the world, raising more than $400M annually, and maintaining a robust membership program, growing on-line donor community, and one of the most successful planned giving programs in the country. Its unprecedented $1.6B Campaign for a Sustainable Planet set forth an agenda that catalyzed the protection of the planet's most critical habitats. Total Conservancy assets are now in excess of $5.6B, and total revenue was nearly $1B in FY10.

The Chief Philanthropy Officer reports to the CEO and occupies an important and strategic leadership role on the Conservancy's Executive Team. He/she oversees directly the work of 150 staff and plays a role in strategy development and best practices oversight for another 400 field-based staff. This position will ideally be based in Arlington, Virginia.

The Chief Philanthropy Officer should possess the following set of professional qualifications and personal attributes:

  • Demonstrated record of innovative leadership and management within the nonprofit, philanthropic, private or public sector.
  • Experience working and thriving in close partnership with an engaged Board of Directors.
  • Ability to adapt, to seize opportunities and to embrace change while managing core responsibilities to exceptional standards and maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Experience working with complex budgets, demonstrating sophisticated financial analytical skills and an interest in evaluation and performance measurement metrics.
  • Able to generate and deliver persuasive and clear verbal, graphic, and written communications as well as an understanding of social media and other marketing and branding platforms.
  • Ability to inspire trust, to organize people into teams and to motivate team members to work well together.

Compensation for the Chief Philanthropy Officer includes a base salary and an excellent package of employee and health benefits.
