POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Title: Associate Director, Renewing America

Salary: Based upon education and experience

Founded in 1921, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is a leading nonprofit membership organization, research center, and publisher, with headquarters in New York, an office in Washington, DC, and programs nationwide. It is dedicated to increasing America's understanding of the world and contributing ideas to U.S. foreign policy. CFR's 4,000+ members are leaders in international affairs and foreign policy. CFR also publishes Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal on global issues, and provides up-to-date information about the world and U.S. foreign policy on its award-winning website, CFR.org.

CFR's Studies Program is one of the country's largest foreign policy think tanks, with a widely respected and influential research staff. The Studies Program's aim is to advance the discussion of American foreign policy and international affairs through its writing, publications, public outreach, and discussions.

The Associate Director will support work on CFR's Renewing America initiative, which sponsors research and writing on the domestic economic underpinnings of U.S. power and influence, under the direction of the senior fellow. The Renewing America initiative will focus on the following areas: infrastructure; education; immigration; debt and deficits; corporate regulation and taxation; innovation; international trade and investment.

The principal responsibilities of this position will include, but are not limited to:

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the Renewing America initiative, including publications, meetings, and events
  • Assisting in overseeing and coordinating the initiative's activities and published products, including working closely with outside authors on research papers intended for policymakers, and editing and proofreading written material
  • Contributing to the annual report, “The Agenda for Renewing America,” that will identify challenges to America's long-term economic health and assess efforts to meet these challenges
  • Producing research and writing on relevant themes as directed by the senior fellow
  • Managing events logistics, including preparing invitations, corresponding with speakers, helping to prepare background papers and materials for distribution
  • Assisting in coordinating the development, funding, meetings, marketing, distribution, and outreach of program
  • Working with other CFR departments to identify funding opportunities, and drafting grant proposals and reports
  • Working closely with directors and research associates on the management of projects

Qualification:
  • MA in Economics or related social sciences field, with high academic achievement. Those with higher degrees or backgrounds in business, engineering, journalism or law will also be considered.
  • Previous related experience that required strong writing and editing ability, knowledge relevant to the issues of the Renewing America initiative, and the ability to work with accomplished researchers and authors.
  • 3+ years related experience in a research, government, consulting, journalism or other relevant role.
  • Superb research, writing, and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and high attention to detail
