Other information
Developmental disorders are conditions that are the result of problems during the development of the body or the brain and are apparent in children from shortly after birth. Currently, in the majority of cases we do not understand why the disorder has happened. However, we know that a significant proportion of developmental disorders are due to genetic factors.

Established in 2004, the DECIPHER project involves a community of academic centres of Clinical Genetics worldwide working to diagnose the causes of developmental disorders using the latest genomic technology. The DECIPHER community is supported by the DECIPHER database, an internet-accessible repository of genotype and phenotype in patients with developmental disorders, hosted at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, to which members of the consortium submit cases. The DECIPHER database has facilitated the discovery of new genetic syndromes by allowing the identification of similar rare cases worldwide that share genotype and phenotype and is commonly used by clinicians in the diagnosis of patients. With the advent of affordable whole genome sequencing, we now have the prospect of identifying new causes of developmental disorders and further improving our ability to diagnose and manage patients. We envision the DECIPHER community and database taking a leading role in the clinical application of these new genomic technologies.
