Group Director, Social Environmental and Economic Development (SEED) in Washington, DC

We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Group Director, Social Environmental and Economic Development (SEED) in Washington, DC.

Position Description:

Responsible for leading three (3) Directors and team (110+ headquarters and 150+ international field-based staff) to include Economic Development and Livelihoods, Environment and Energy, and Civil Society and Peace building comprising of PhD and master’s level technical and program staff, to develop and maintain an integrated and coordinated portfolio in support of FHI 360’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives. The incumbent should possess a high level of scientific, program, and management expertise and substantial experience relevant to Economic Development, Environment and Energy and/or other relevant fields and the ability provide oversight to a diverse portfolio of projects within a complex organizational framework keeping department staff aligned with organizational goals.

  • Reporting to Chief Operating Officer, contribute to the overall development and functioning of the operations area
  • Provide thought leadership and shape strategic priorities and goals for the SEED group’s portfolio in collaboration with department Directors
  • Provide high level oversight to SEED departments in an effort to facilitate business development and well-managed execution of projects
  • Foster technical excellence, quality program implementation, and maximum impact for beneficiaries
  • Entrepreneurially seek and create opportunities to build business, and collaborate and innovate with partners
  • Develop and monitor group work plans, staffing plans and budgets.
  • Represent FHI360 at meetings, panels and in discussions with government sponsors such as USAID as well as private foundations; international organizations (especially UNICEF, WHO); government counterparts; and implementing agencies in coordinating their participation in project development and implementation.
  • Interact internally and externally with program staff, government sponsors and counterparts requiring negotiation of extremely difficult matters.
  • Play a key role in corporate development of methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for FHI 360’s programs.
  • Build FHI 360 brand and reputation in the SEED areas of expertise

Minimum Requirements:

  • Extensive knowledge on gender and impact on economic livelihood and development
  • World-class technical knowledge in Economic Development and other topic areas housed under the SEED group
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a large group with diverse areas of professional expertise, with good interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • Business development record, including working with range of clients and developing partnerships
  • Strong relationships and credibility within the Economic Development and Social Environment community
  • Ability to foster a working environment that nurtures and facilitates innovation and creativity
  • Excellent professional reputation
  • Current and extensive professional networks in the areas of social enterprise, livelihoods and private sector development.
  • Knowledge of cutting edge thinking and innovations in the field of private sector development and livelihoods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with a professional and/or academic publication track record
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed, including travel to developing countries.

Master’s level in Economic Development or related field, and 20 years+ demonstrated experience in development experience. PhD preferred.
