Linux/Web Engineer in Washington, DC

Position Description:
  • The Linux/Web Engineer will work closely with the ITAC Web Engineer to administer web servers, services, and software applications used for FHI 360 projects.
  • Linux system administration: Administer servers running SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, OpenSUSE, and Ubuntu. This includes testing & installing updates, troubleshooting, defect tracking, root-cause analysis, and problem resolution.
  • Google Applications & Services: Deploy and maintain Google-based infrastructure including Google Apps, Google Appengine, Google APIs, and Google Analytics.
  • Liferay: Install, configure, deploy, update, & troubleshoot Liferay Portal 6.
  • General: Manage and synchronize development, QA, and production environments for all platforms & services.
  • Perform troubleshooting and coordinate upgrades to hardware & software.
  • Serve as the main point of contact with ITAC’s server hosting providers.
  • Administer configuration and access to ITAC’s source code management systems.
  • Work with Enterprise IT department to plan and manage ITAC’s current & future hosting infrastructure.
  • Produce technical documents, reports, presentations, and graphical models.
  • Produce website usage reports based on Google Analytics and database information.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in one of the following or related fields: Computer Science, Information Systems, or other Job-related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; Must have excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently and with a team;
  • Demonstrated time & task management skills sufficient to meet multiple concurrent deadlines;
  • Able to work on multiple projects simultaneously, paying attention to detail under tight deadlines or heavy workloads;
  • Ability to interact professionally with culturally and linguistically diverse staff, clients, and consultants;
  • Demonstrated communication and people skills to work effectively both within a diverse organization and outside of the organization;
  • Must be able to prepare requests for proposals (RFPs), statements of work, and work orders;
  • Experience creating and managing project plans and schedules.
  • Required: Linux systems administration [SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, OpenSUSE, Ubuntu]; Thorough understanding of and deep experience with TCP/IP internetworking; 2 years Linux system administration; 2 years LAMP stack administration; Java Application Server administration [Apache Tomcat, JBoss, et al.]; Understanding of Computer Science / programming concepts and theory; Intermediate to advanced knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Desired: Google Appengine optimization; Experience with IT Service Management Frameworks, specifically ITIL; Wordpress, Drupal administration; Virtualization [e.g., VMware Workstation & ESXi, Openbox, Xen, KVM]; Java, Python, PHP programming; Installation & administration of relational databases such as MySQL; Familiarity with User Experience & Information Architecture principles and methodology; Experience with various software development methods; Able to lead requirements-gathering activities, including stakeholder interviews, process modeling, and use case development; Experience coordinating the development of sitemaps, wireframes, content production plans, and other web design & development artifacts.
