Plant Molecular Geneticist East Malling Research

East Malling Research (EMR) is an independent provider of top-class research, development and consultancy serving the food chain, with particular emphasis on perennial horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment. EMR's team of scientists integrate their knowledge of breeding and molecular genetics, genomics, pest and disease biology and management, crop and post-harvest physiology, agronomy, environmental science, food product development and consumer research, to address both strategic and industry issues.

Plant Molecular Geneticist

EMR is involved in genetic improvement of perennial crops and has an international reputation for developing successful cultivars of temperate fruit crops and rootstocks. We are seeking an innovative and enthusiastic plant molecular biologist to drive research projects underpinning the breeding programmes. In the programme there is a strong emphasis on sequencing approaches to understand the genetic basis of complex traits and transcriptomics approaches to understand the regulation of genes important in plant improvement, including host disease resistance, plant-microbe interactions, fruit quality traits and resource use efficiency.

The appointee will join the Genetics and Crop Improvement Programme but will work closely with crop physiologists, entomologists and phytopathologists at EMR, using functional genomics approaches to investigate plant responses to biotic stresses and mechanisms of pathogen action including effectoromics approaches.

The successful candidate will develop national and international collaborations in genomics research and prepare grant proposals to attract research funding. Publications in high impact journals will be expected and an ability to communicate and present to both scientific and industry audiences is important.

The appointment will be in Pay Band 5/6, £25,536-35,629, with salary dependent on experience and relevant qualifications. 25 days annual leave plus 8 days public holidays, pleasant working environment and eligibility to join the USS pension scheme upon appointment.
