Root Biologist East Malling Research

East Malling Research (EMR) is an independent provider of top-class research, development and consultancy serving the food chain, with particular emphasis on perennial horticultural crops and their interactions with the environment. EMR's team of scientists integrate their knowledge of breeding and molecular genetics, genomics, pest and disease biology and management, crop and pest-harvest physiology, agronomy, environmental science, food product development and consumer research, to address both strategic and industry issues.

Root Biologist

EMR aims to be recognised as the pre-eminent research institution in the UK for strategic and applied research, development and innovation in horticulture. Building on our significant international reputation we wish to appoint a root biologist who will progress our scientific understanding of the performance of rootstocks.

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic postdoctoral scientist with interests in the communication of signals between roots and shoots and the consequences of this interaction for architecture and growth of both the root and shoot systems. The ability to draw on science from a wide range of sciences including genetics, biochemistry, physiology and soil science will be essential in this multi-disciplinary topic.

The successful candidate will be expected to innovate and actively seek their own research funding, whilst developing collaborative contacts both nationally and internationally. Communication via peer-reviewed publications, at conferences and in talks to the fruit-growing industry will be essential.

The appointment will be in Pay Band 6, £25,536 - £29,438, with salary dependent on experience and relevant qualifications. 25 days annual leave plus 8 days public holidays, pleasant working environment and eligibility to join the USS pension scheme upon appointment.
