Job Description
We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic web designer/developer to lead our new Web Development Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating an effective and responsive web development team which uses modern web technologies (such as Javascript, PHP, JQuery, HTML5, JSON and Drupal) and best practise techniques and (s)he must have a working knowledge of web site user testing and user centred design techniques. The incumbent will work closely with the different content teams, who are responsible for EMBL-EBI's Data Resources and Services, and will build strong, positive relationships with the current web and systems teams. The Team Leader will also lead EMBL-EBI's Web guidelines process and will be expected to apply for grants on his/her own and in collaboration with other groups at EMBL-EBI. The position reports to the Co-Associate Director, Dr Ewan Birney. EMBL-EBI is part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and is a world-leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation.

Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate should hold a PhD in a Biological science, a masters in a Computational or Physics science or be able to show evidence of excellent management skills coupled with a minimum of 5 years, documented experience in successful delivery of web development technology. Proficiency in web technologies such as HTML, Javascript, PHP or other languages is essential. The incumbent will be self-motivated and capable of working both independently and with the closely interacting Web Production and Systems teams. As the role will involve liaising with different groups and users, it is essential that the candidate has excellent communication, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills. (S)he should be able to demonstrate solid problem solving skills and have experience of working to deadlines.
