System Engineer EPO - European Patent Office

The Information Management (IM) department of the European Patent Office (EPO) has 800 staff working on IT and information processing, with a professional and proactive focus on supporting the EPO's different business processes.

Its System Engineering directorate comprises various teams taking care of the EPO's technical infrastructure in the following fields: databases, office automation, mainframe, network, Unix and Windows.

The Unix Systems team is responsible for the design, planning, implementation, maintenance and support of the AIX and Unix/Linux server infrastructure. We currently maintain approximately 300 servers, including AIX on IBM POWER hardware, virtual Linux servers on VMware clusters and virtual Linux servers hosted on z/VM on IBM mainframe hardware. A wide range of applications – commercial, open-source and in-house developments – run on these servers. This team is now looking for a System Engineer.

Main duties

  • System design and planning under the general direction of the team leader;
  • Responsible of design of VMware cluster;
  • Autonomous planning of design and set-up of new infrastructure systems;
  • Investigation, definition and resolution of complex problems affecting application owners and developers;
  • Investigation, definition and resolution of complex problems affecting DMZ systems;
  • Deputising for the team manager and representing him in meetings with other units.

The ideal candidate will have

  • experience with large VMware clusters;
  • experience and understanding of how to implement DMZ systems in a VMware cluster;
  • experience with Linux running on virtualised servers;
  • experience with SAN systems used in conjunction with VMware and Linux;
  • experience with AutoYast.

It will also be an advantage to have

  • knowledge of AIX and IBM POWER hardware and logical partitioning;
  • knowledge of NIM (Network Installation Manager) and CSM;
  • knowledge of TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager);
  • knowledge of LDAP servers;
  • knowledge of Xen.

Additionally, candidates should have

  • excellent scripting skills (ksh, bash or perl);
  • good communication skills (oral and written);
  • the ability to work both independently and in a team.

Furthermore, candidates must be prepared to take part in the team's 24/7 on-call rota, and to work during "off-line" hours, i.e. weekdays after 19.00 hrs or at weekends. These responsibilities will be carried on within the enforced EPO ITIL framework principles following the staff member's professional expertise. Assistance suitable to be sought by customers or internal team members holding a lower degree of autonomy.

Minimum qualifications

Diploma of completed studies at university level or – in exceptional cases – equivalent professional experience. Excellent knowledge of one official language (English, French or German) and ability to understand the other two.

Duration of the contract

The contract will be on a non-renewable basis for the duration of 3 years. An extension over the period of 36 months shall not be possible.
