Associate Program Manager, CIBI/GIST

The Associate Program Manager (APM) provides a broad range of support in the implementation of the Global Innovation through Science and Technology (GIST) Initiative, including but not limited to managing and growing the GIST online communities, confirming content partners, implementing online educational webinars, developing a mentorship accreditation program and country specific programs, and providing support in building partnerships and sponsorships with corporations, international agencies and investment funds.

The GIST Initiative is supported by the U.S. Department of State and implemented by CRDF Global. The GIST Initiative supports promising entrepreneurs through its venture competitions, online platform, comprehensive online and offline training programs and its university industry partnerships. The GIST Initiative is looking for an enterprising, creative and driven leader to join its fast paced, energetic and globally minded team and support its efforts to identify, train, mentor and fund the most promising technology entrepreneurs in MENA, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central and Southeast Asia. The technology sectors GIST targets are information and communications technology, healthcare, energy and agriculture.

The APM will work closely with the Program Manager to implement the key deliverables for the GIST Initiative:

  • expanding its presence in online communities (the GIST website, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn);
  • articulating the benefits (value proposition) that key stakeholders (entrepreneurs, mentors, experts, judges, partners) will derive from their involvement in the Initiative;
  • developing the GIST Executive in Residence Program;
  • promoting the sustainability of GIST partner organizations, including securing sponsorships;

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Helps design, develop and maintain the GIST website.
  • Develops content objectives for the website and actively employs social media to advance the visibility of the GIST Initiative.
  • Manages, grows and maintains the GIST virtual network; identifies content partners, implements online educational webinars for the network members, grows the online communities of GIST.
  • Implements a PR, positioning and branding strategy for GIST under the supervision of the Program Manager.
  • Promotes the program and its objectives through communications with, and other outreach efforts to, current and potential stakeholders.
  • Interviews GIST entrepreneurs, partners, mentors and advisors and prepares content for dissemination on GIST and partners’ media platforms. Researches and identifies opportunities to introduce the GIST Initiative to strategic conferences, events and organizations.
  • Designs and implements a strategy to recruit approximately 100 qualified business mentors from the US and internationally. Together with the GIST Mentorship expert, Program manager and country partners, implements a mentorship accreditation program.
  • Works with the Program Manager to design and implement specific country initiatives and programs.
  • Prepares projects and activities, task plans, statements of work, project metrics, schedules, deliverables, work budgets; and prepares and submits proposed modifications if necessary.
  • Manages project and activity execution in accordance with approved plans; provides technical oversight and guidance on project execution; tracks progress; conducts on-site reviews if appropriate; identifies challenges hindering implementation and proposes solutions; reviews project reports and other deliverables; monitors expenditures against budget; and initiates payment processes.
  • Coordinates logistics for site visits, conferences, meetings, workshops, training sessions, and/or other events, including travel and hotel arrangements, visas, permissions and clearances, interpreters, advances in per diem, itineraries, and agendas; travels within the US and internationally to participate, facilitate, and/or follow up on such events as appropriate.
  • Works with internal contracting office to develop contracts for experts, mentors and advisors for the scheduled activities, training programs and events.
  • Reports regularly to the Program Manager on project or activity status; drafts formal interim and completion reports for funder organizations as required.

Qualifications


Qualifications:

  • At least 2 years of international experience, depending on the program area, with substantive experience living and working/studying in a foreign language environment preferred; in lieu of actual experience, educational background or demonstrated strong background, interest, and curiosity relevant to the GIST Initiative focus areas: MENA, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central or Southeast Asia.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining web sites and online communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn, adapt quickly to new challenges, take initiative and work independently with strong organization and time management skills.
  • Good critical thinking and analysis, planning, and problem solving skills.
  • Excellent and effective written and oral communications skills and the ability to interact with a wide range of individuals from varied backgrounds at all levels within their organizations,
  • Sufficient understanding of entrepreneurial ecosystem development and issues desirable in order to be credible in contacts with the entrepreneurial community.
  • Interest in entrepreneurship, start-up creation, and technology commercialization
  • Superb command of the English language. French language skills are desired but not required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in field relevant to the program area
  • Master’s Degree not required but preferred
  • Knowledge of Open Source platforms, content management platforms and social networks
  • U.S. work authorization
