BUILDING MAINTENANCE ENGINEER The African Union

The African Union, established as a unique Pan African continental body, is charged with spearheading Africa’s rapid integration and sustainable development by promoting unity, solidarity, cohesion and cooperation among the peoples of Africa and African States as well as developing a new partnership worldwide. Its Headquarters is located in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.

In seeking to achieve these objectives, the African Union intends to strengthen its capacity to deliver by, among others, the implementation of new organization structure and the filling of vacant posts.

The Commission of the African Union invites applicants who are citizens of Member States for the post of BUILDING MAINTENANCE ENGINEER.

1. Post:

Job Title: BUILDING MAINTENANCE ENGINEER

Grade: P2
Supervisor: Chief of the Facilities Management Unit
Directorate: Administration and Human Resources Development
Duty Station: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

2. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Facilities Management Unitthe Officer shall be in charge of :

‐ Inspects buildings, grounds and equipment for unsafe or malfunctioning
conditions
‐ Conducts periodic general preventative maintenance on the mechanical,
electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems. This involves normal lubrication,
adjustment cleaning, replacement of consumable parts (such as filters, indicator lights, etc.), and periodic testing of the equipment. These systems include, but are not limited to; air handling units (including both rooftop and built- up units), re-circulating air systems, water pumping systems, cooling plant and all plumbing system components.

‐ Assists with installation and modification of building equipment systems.

‐ Performs and/or oversee electrical and plumbing repair and troubleshooting.

‐ Performs and/or oversee water treatment and testing.

‐ Performs all assigned work so as to ensure the safety of the building’s tenants and the continuous operation of the site.

‐ Prioritizes service calls and follow-up upon completion.

‐ Troubleshoots, evaluates and recommends equipment/service upgrades

‐ Coordinates maintenance efforts with outside contractors and technicians when work cannot be performed in-house. Coordinates contractor, tenant and management approvals for work orders that require the use of an outside contractor. Maintains log of work order details.

‐ Orders parts and supplies as required, and maintains stock and inventory control.

‐ Works with Building Manager in planning and controlling annual and capital budgets.
‐ Be responsive to tenant complaints in the areas of safety, plumbing, mechanical, electrical and environmental needs through both personal contact and work order systems.

‐ Prepares and maintains maintenance logs and records.

‐ Be familiar with and conform to all written operating procedures associated with site.

‐ Ensures the cleanliness and appearance of all work areas


4. Qualifications and Experience Required:

A minimum University Bachelor Degree inEngineering or higher technician in building construction

4. Professional experience required:

‐ At least five years experiences as Supervisor of building maintenance

‐ 3 years experiences in construction and Project Manager

5. Language Requirement:

Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Proficiency of one or several other working language(s) would be an added advantage.

6. Age Requirement:

Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.

7. Tenure of Appointment:

The appointment will be made on fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months be consider as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two (2) years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance and deliverables

9. Remuneration:

Indicative basic salary US$ 27,892.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (46% of basic salary), housing allowance (US$14,414.40 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc. for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
