The Deputy Executive Director, Programme is a member of the executive and senior management bodies of the UNAIDS Secretariat, and is responsible for providing strategic guidance and vision, including coordinating the technical and programmatic components to implement the UNAIDS Strategy and the targets in the Political Declaration on HIV/AIDS adopted by the UN General Assembly High Level Meeting; providing leadership for the UNAIDS Secretariat on tracking, monitoring and evaluating the status of the epidemic and effectiveness of the response; translating science and evidence into actionable guidance; and linking political, strategic initiatives to operational and programmatic priorities at the country level.

In addition to a distinguished career in public health, social or physical sciences, development studies, international relations and/or social planning, the ideal candidate has a minimum of eighteen years of experience in increasingly challenging leadership and senior management functions at international level, with demonstrated achievements in developing countries; a track record in areas such as AIDS programming, strategic planning, policy development, human rights, gender, and monitoring and evaluation; extensive experience with and knowledge of the United Nations system; outstanding advocacy, interpersonal and communication skills to represent the organization at the highest levels; and successful experience with leading and managing multi-cultural programmes and teams.

An advanced university degree in a relevant field of studies and fluency in English are required, with knowledge of French or other official UN languages an asset.
