Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking an Associate to provide administrative, research and clerical assistance to experts within the US Program working on counterterrorism issues such as indefinite detention, torture, and targeted killings. The position reports to the Senior Counterterrorism Counsel and Advocate. HRW anticipates that the successful candidate will ideally take up this position in June 2013.
Responsibilities:
1. Preparing, drafting, editing, formatting and distributing documents such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and web content;
2. Assisting with research, electronic clipping, wires and translations;
3. Retrieving and responding to requests for information;
4. Scheduling, making travel arrangements and preparing for and taking minutes at meetings;
5. Drafting and editing correspondence and other documents;
6. Creating and maintaining extensive filing and archiving systems;
7. Recruiting and coordinating interns;
8. Recording departmental finances;
9. Word processing; photocopying; filing; faxing; answering phones; processing incoming mail; and
10. Carrying out other duties as required.
Qualifications:
Education:  Bachelor’s degree in a related field is required.
Experience:  Minimum 1 year of relevant work experience is desirable.
Related Skills and Knowledge: 
1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
3. Strong background and/or interest in international law, counterterrorism, national security and/or criminal justice in the United States preferred.
4. Strong interpersonal skills are required.
5. Ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks simultaneously.
6. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions.
7. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team.
8. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications.
Other: Applicants for this position must possess current US work authorization valid for a minimum of two years from start date.
Salary and Benefits:  Salary range starts at $20,155.  Human Rights Watch offers comprehensive employer-paid benefits, including medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, an outstanding retirement savings plan and ten (10) days vacation per year.
Contract Duration:  Initial one year fixed term contract.  Renewable depending on the availability of continued funding.
