International Potato Centre Jobs

The International Potato Centre (CIP) is seeking suitable candidates to fill a number of positions for a regional project on an integrated agriculture-nutrition intervention using orange-fleshed sweetpotato as a key entry point.

Project Leader for Regional Going-to-Scale Intervention (Ref: 13-45 PLR/IRS/SSA): He or she will provide leadership, management and strategic vision while managing staff and resources to ensure that the project meets its targets and deliverable on-time and within budget. The position will be part of the regional project team and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya.

The suitable candidate should have PhD in agricultural economics, nutrition, marketing, rural development, in a biological or other social science. Specific training related to sweetpotato, nutrition, or gender is an added advantage. Other criteria include relevant experience of 10 years, a record of publications and citations, and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. A working knowledge of Portuguese and/or French is desirable.

Sweetpotato Specialist for Mozambique (Ref:13-49 SSPD/IRS/SSA): He or she will be based in Maputo with extensive travel within the country and reporting to the Senior Breeder and to the Project Manager in Mozambique. The tasks and responsibilities include: Assist in the coordination and implementation of the sweetpotato population breeding activities for Southern Africa; coordinate organisation and implementation of stakeholder meetings and planning sessions; ensure the production of high quality foundation planting material; backstop as a trainer; engage in widespread dissemination of improved sweetpotato varieties; and provide technical assistance to the national programme.

The suitable candidate should have a PhD degree in plant breeding or genetics or molecular breeding with at least two years of experience in field research, expertise in experimental design related to breeding trials, data collection, analysis, interpretation and report writing, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Working knowledge of Portuguese or Spanish is required.

Nutritionist (Ref:13-46 N/IRS/SSA): He or she will be based in Kigali with extensive travel within Rwanda and occasional travel to Mozambique, Malawi, and Kenya, and will report to the Project Leader for Regional Going-to-Scale Intervention. The tasks and responsibilities include: Design and implement formative research with local partners in each country; design, analyse, and write up nutrition-related components for structured surveys; engage with country teams and partners to develop cost-effective nutrition interventions; participate in monitoring and evaluation teams; work with media and marketing teams to develop appropriate nutrition messages; and engage with policy makers to advocate for food-based interventions.

The suitable candidate should have a PhD degree in Nutrition or Public Health with at least two years of experience in community-level nutrition programmes or Master’s Degree in Nutrition with at least five years’ experience in community level nutrition or other health programmes with efforts to change behaviours. In addition, he or she should have a good publishing record and excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Working knowledge of French required.

Agriculture Value Chain Specialist for Malawi (Ref: 13-47 AVCS/IRS/SSA) to be based in Lilongwe, Agriculture Value Chain Specialist for Kenya (Ref: 13-48 AVCS/RRS/SSA) to be based in Kisumu, and Agriculture Value Chain Specialist for Mozambique (Ref: 13-51 AVCS/IRS/SSA) to be based in Maputo. These will be responsible for the implementation of the projects in the respective countries. It will require managing complex multi-disciplinary partnerships with government, non-governmental implementation organisations and private sector partners and working closely with other CIP scientists.

The persons will be part of the regional project team and report to the regionally based Project Leader. Selection criteria include: PhD in agricultural economics, nutrition, marketing or other similar fields. Specific training related to sweetpotato is an added advantage. Relevant experience of working with government, private sector and NGO collaborators as well as working in agricultural seed systems or value chains, preferably with sweetpotato or other vegetatively propagated crops. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English with working knowledge of another language depending on the country. Good record of publications and citations and demonstrated expertise to write, plan research, analyse data and complete timely reports.
