About the Organization: 
Kiva is a person-to-person micro-lending website. It is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Kiva works with MFIs on five continents to provide loans to people without access to traditional banking systems. It is primarily funded through the support of lenders making optional donations.
About the Job: 
Kiva is seeking a Risk Director. S/he will be responsible for furthering the development and maintenance of organization'€™s risk management framework and operational processes. S/he will review partnerships and oversee ongoing monitoring.
Tasks and Responsibilities: 
  • Make credit decisions:
    • Serve as a member of organization’s investment committee where field partners at higher levels of due diligence are reviewed in terms of credit risk and social performance;
    • Validate the credit limits and star risk ratings given to field partners.
  • Monitor outstanding portfolio:
    • Monitor portfolio-wide risk, including financial, and social and operational metrics;
    • Monitor credit and country risks across the portfolio and recommend modifications as warranted.
  • Operational management:
    • Partner with senior leadership team to update and adapt organization’s current risk management strategies as organization evolves;
    • Review current processes and policies and suggest adaptations to increase growth, efficiency, and social impact, while managing risk.
  • Manage overall reputation risk:
    • Perform annual analysis of the portfolio to understand profitability of organization’s partners and interest rates charged;
    • Lead thinking on how to manage reputational risk while maintaining efficiencies in organization’s due diligence and monitoring processes.
  • Manage problem credits:
    • Manage all problem credits that are in a “work with” or “work out” stage;
    • Lead problem partner meeting at organization comprised of all stakeholders involved in dealing with troubled credits.
Qualifications: 
  • Minimum 5 - 8 years in financial services, audit and/or consulting, with experience in risk management and leading process improvements;
  • Experience or exposure to international business and operations required;
  • Experience in microfinance, social enterprise or impact investing;
  • Proven ability to think creatively about risk and social impact;
  • Exceptional analytical skills;
  • Ability to interact effectively with people of other cultures, capacities, and organizations;
  • Strong computer skills (Excel, Word processing, and internet applications, with some Salesforce experience desired but not required) and ability to learn new technologies quickly;
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a fast paced entrepreneurial culture;
  • Proficiency in one of organization’s working languages (Spanish, French or Russian) is desirable.
