Job Summary

​Cardno TEC is currently recruiting for a Sr. Wildlife Biologist/Principal Investigator for project work in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).  The Senior Wildlife Biologist/Principal Investigator performs and leads the professional analysis on environmental issues including regulatory compliance, program planning, and mitigation measures related to the conservation of avian species.  The chosen candidate must have an understanding of, and the ability to utilize, pertinent aspects of natural sciences and/or public health that pertain to the management and protection of the environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Project management
  • Inventory or estimate wildlife populations
  • Conduct or manage rare bird surveys
  • Map habitat types
  • Investigate federal and state threatened and endangered species
  • Facilitate and participate in wetlands investigations
  • Write associated reports
  • Write management plans, wetland reports and permitting, etc.
  • Apply professional competence with specialized knowledge of avian species, particularly species found in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI)
  • Develop management plans/mitigation plans in accordance with applicable regulations
  • Interface with regulatory agencies to direct environmental efforts and comply with environmental regulations. Write environmental guidelines, analytical studies, plans, and other legally sufficient documents
  • Participate in preparation of NEPA documents and public involvement process compose fact sheets, brochures, posters, and strategize project logistics), and write document sections within personal area of professional expertise

Other Requirements

​Minimum Qualifications Required:
  • Ph.D. in avian ecology or related field
  • 3 years of relevant work experience in natural resources field, including conducting avian point count surveys, territory mapping, and presence/absence surveys for Pacific Island avian species, with particular experience with federally threatened or endangered species in the CNMI
  • Ability to identify avian species within the CNMI by sight and sound
  • Ability to exercise professional discretion and judgment
  • Ability to use scientific rules and methods to solve problems
  • Strong writing skills and ability to communicate complex scientific ideas to a general audience in reports
  • Ability to work in project locations remote from home office for extended time periods; such remote deployments may recur with as little as 3 calendar days intervening between deployments
Training and Experience:
  • Possession of ESA section 10 permit or be listed as a sub-permitee to conduct taped playback surveys for the Mariana common moorhen within the CNMI preferred
  • Experience and training by the military in detection, avoidance, and reporting of unexploded ordnance (UXO) desired
  • Experience with CNMI regulatory community desirable
  • Experience with GIS and GPS

  • The employee is required to work in hot, humid conditions on remote Pacific Islands, involving extensive hiking within jungles over steep, rocky terrain and within open areas subject to intense sun exposure for long periods.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • The employee frequently is required to walk, sit, and talk or hear.
  • The employee is occasionally required to stand; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/ or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Will be required to perform other duties as requested, directed or assigned.
  • This position requires periodic travel, including international travel.
