Senior Protection Coordinator - Iraq

We are looking for an experienced and dedicated Senior Protection Coordinator to take the advisory responsibility for leading, coordinating and overseeing DRC’s protection activities in the DRC areas of operations over Iraq.
Danish Refugee Council is urgently seeking key staff for our current operation and emergency scale-up in the Kurdish (KRI) and Central Regions of Iraq - two of the most challenging humanitarian settings worldwide.
Who are we?
Danish Refugee Council is a leading protection agency pursuing our mandate to protect and promote durable solutions to displacement affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), DRC apply a regional approach with operational presence in Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq.
Being operational in Iraq since 2003, DRC is today operational in the Kurdish governorates, in and around Baghdad and in South Central. Focused both on the influx of Syrian refugees and the current IDP crisis, DRC is providing assistance in a range of sectors including CCCM, Protection, Livelihoods, Emergency Response (including food security, cash, and NFIs), WASH and Shelter.
The Iraq programme presently employs 160 national staff and 17 international staff, but is expanding in responds to the current emergency through funding from ECHO, DFID, USAID, UN, DANIDA, Sida etc.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Senior Protection Coordinator is expected to ensure that the programme protection activities are up to the minimum standards and in line with DRC strategic priorities. The senior Protection Coordinator is also expected to promote and consolidate DRC position as a leading protection organization in the Iraq context. On a daily basis the Senior Protection Coordinator has management responsibility for the implementation of the protections projects in Erbil.
And more specifically The Senior Protection Coordinator will:
• Consolidate the development and lead the roll out of DRC's Iraq's protection strategy;
• Ensure that protection is mainstreamed into DRC Iraq sectors of operation (shelter, distribution and livelihood);
• Oversee implementation of protection activities and ensure that objectives and results are timely and qualitatively met;
• Specifically, be responsible for the implementation of protection projects in Erbil.
• Contribute to the development of proposals to secure follow on or expansion funding for the protection program as per identified needs;
• Produce high quality and timely reports for DRC, partners and donors within agreed deadlines
• Develop work plans and monitoring tools as appropriate, and make monitoring visits to project sites as necessary;
• Evaluate impact of project program on beneficiaries and conflict-affected communities,
• Support DRC offices in developing and/or improving information management, including standardize databases for protection monitoring and planning purposes.
• Assist recruiting, coaching and evaluating protection staff;
• Develop and deliver protection trainings for DRC staff and partners;
• Coordinate with national, local and international actors and participate to working groups and other meetings and forums as needed;
• Any other duties as agreed with the Head of Programmes.
The Senior Protection Coordinator reports to the Head of emergency Programmes
Qualifications and profile
To match this role you must have extensive experience in emergency contexts together with a university degree or higher education relevant to humanitarian work (preferably in law, social sciences or humanitarian aid). In addition you have:
• Significant knowledge of International Human Rights Law, particularly with Refugee Law;
• Cultural sensitivity and adaptability
• Proven experience of at least 5 years in international protection, advocacy work, and refugee emergency programs;
• Experience in international humanitarian work and refugee and/or IDP complex emergencies
• Experience with managing teams and providing technical guidance and training
• Proven communication, interpersonal, representation, negotiation, promotion and diplomacy skills,
• Proven analytical and writing skills,
• Ability to quickly develop good insight and understanding of the conflict, the human rights situation and the political environment of the program country,
• Ideally; experience in Protection training;
• Knowledge and experience of cash programs and targeting methodologies.
• Fluency in English; proficiency in Arabic an asset.

Availability: Immediately
Duty station: Erbil, Iraq (with frequent travels within Iraq)

Safety Environment
While the safety situation in broader Iraq remains volatile, safety in the KRI remains relatively secure. While there has been no direct threats to International NGOs or their expatriate staff care must be taken when traveling. The stability in the KRI allows for substantial freedom of movement. Nevertheless restrictions may be emplaced based on events that may develop rapidly.
