OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE

Head of Programme –
Agricultural Development and Policy
Contract: Full-time
Salary: £46,509 - £57,201pa
Location: London
Ref: ADP/01/11

The UK's leading independent think tank on international development and humanitarian issues.

ODI (www.odi.org.uk) aims to inspire and inform policy and practice to reduce poverty by locking together high-quality applied research and practical policy advice.

ODI's agriculture programme is being restructured to focus on agricultural development – at a time when this subject is attracting unprecedented interest owing to the key challenges of feeding a growing world population, reducing hunger and poverty, and adapting to climate change, water scarcity and a growing demand for biofuels.

The new agriculture programme will replace our current Protected Livelihoods and Agricultural Growth programme, and will support the design and implementation of effective policies and programmes on agriculture and other issues at the rural-urban interface to benefit the poor in developing countries.

We are seeking an exceptional Head of Programme to launch this focused agriculture programme at ODI, leading and managing a dynamic team of highly capable, geographically-dispersed and committed colleagues. Your responsibilities will include establishing the new programme, marketing and public affairs, undertaking research, and overseeing the completion of existing workstreams to the highest professional standards.

Current workstreams include:

  • Producing a book on globalisation and the rural poor based in Africa and Asia
  • Finalising a detailed study of the food prices crisis for the UK Department for International Development
  • Advising the Global Platform for Rural Development on the future of agricultural policy, aid and private sector development

Key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Leadership: shaping the agriculture programme and leading a team of three senior and two junior researchers plus a programme officer
  • Research and policy advisory work: conducting high-quality applied research
  • Fundraising: attracting funds through bids and marketing, including the development of a substantial personal research portfolio
  • Public affairs: disseminating and promoting the programme's work and ideas

Above all, you have a passionate commitment to agriculture in a development context, backed by in-depth experience and skills. You have a proven capacity for first-class and high-profile research, policy advice and public affairs, and the ability to win work and attract funds for development policy research. You are able to write and communicate clearly, and have strong analytical and organisational skills.

Closing date: 11th March 2011
