Job announcement: Latin America & Caribbean Researcher & Representative – consultancy –
Based in Bogotá, Colombia or Lima, Peru (location will depend on the successful candidate)
Fees (depending on experience, skills, language abilities & education):
Colombia: 2,600,000-2,900,000 pesos per month for working 21 hours per week (equivalent to 4,333,333-4,833,333 pesos per month for full-time work)
Peru: 3,500-3,800 soles per month for working 21 hours per week (equivalent to 5,833-6,333 soles per month for full-time work)
Closing date: 14 March 2011 (end of day)
Applicants must have:
• fluent Spanish and very strong English language skills;
• the right to work in Colombia or Peru; and
• previous work or volunteer experience in a non-profit organization addressing human rights, labour rights, development, environment, social justice, or other social issues.
Business & Human Rights Resource Centre, the international non-profit NGO tracking the social & environmental impacts (positive & negative) of over 5000 companies, is seeking a highly-motivated person to be its Latin America & Caribbean Researcher & Representative. The Centre’s website is recognised internationally as the leading information hub on this subject, receiving 1.5 million hits per month. The United Nations & ILO link their websites to ours. Mary Robinson chairs our International Advisory Network, which includes 6 experts in Latin America. 23 academic institutions, including 5 in Latin America, comprise our Academic Partners. You will be reporting to the Centre’s Director and Deputy Director (a national of Colombia), working with them and other staff to further develop the organization, its website, and its work and contacts in the region.
You will cover Latin America & the Caribbean. Your responsibilities will include:
• online research and input of information in Spanish & English onto the Resource Centre website;
• inviting companies to respond to concerns raised about their conduct;
• representing the Resource Centre regionally, at meetings & conferences;
• building contacts with, and seeking information from, a broad range of people working in Latin American & Caribbean NGOs, companies, media, investment firms, universities, governments, etc;
• conducting regional research missions;
• making a special effort to draw attention to under-reported issues & cases in the region.
You must have an ability to represent the organization in Latin America & the Caribbean and to build a broad range of contacts. You will need strong research & analytical skills to identify relevant materials for the website, categorise the information, and compose brief summaries in Spanish & English. You will need to be willing to do a significant amount of online input to help keep the website updated. Rigorous attention to detail, sound political judgment, and the ability to present information objectively & impartially are also required.
You must have good word processing skills, and the ability to function under pressure and manage a heavy workload. Good organizational, communication & interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to human rights, are essential. You must be willing to work on your own initiative, prioritise with minimal supervision, and work independently as well as function as part of a team. You must be self-servicing in terms of administrative tasks.
As we do not have office premises in Colombia or Peru, you will need to be willing and able to work from home and/or from a host institution (e.g. if a university or NGO is willing to provide office space).
We now have 5 regional researchers based in: Anglophone Africa; East Asia; Eastern Europe/Central Asia; Francophone Africa; South Asia. We are seeking funding to recruit others in Brazil; East Africa; Mexico, Central America & Caribbean; the Middle East; Portuguese-speaking Africa; and Southeast Asia.
