RESEARCH SCHOLAR/ASSISTANT RESEARCH SCHOLAR

HOORC ENTOMOLOGIST (Contract Position)

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to undertake research on entomological aspects of the Okavango Delta and the Kgalagadi (Kalahari) region. The researcher may initiate new research or support ongoing projects that require services of an entomologist. Services to current ongoing projects include malaria vectors identification and identification of aquatic organisms used as indicators of biotic integrity. General duties will include research into the ecology and conservation status of various arthropod and arachnid taxa in the Okavango Delta and field and laboratory studies directed at identification, classification and control of insects that may have an adverse effect on the environment or be used as bio-control agents. Delivery on the following specific duties will be expected from the successful candidate • build capacity for entomological work at the institute through in house training of technical staff • develop and establish long term monitoring of major insect groups in the Okavango Delta • contribute to the research environment of the institute by preparing project proposals for funding • work in a team and be able to interact and join current research programmes at the institute • disseminate scholarly research findings via high-quality peer reviewed journals and other outlets, including national and international scientific meetings teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students

Requirements: Research Scholar: Candidates should have (i) a PhD in Entomology or equivalent post at a university or a comparable institution; ii) a good record of research and publications; and iii) evidence of service to the institution and community. University teaching experience and evidence of leadership will be an added advantage. Assistant Research Scholar: Candidates should have (i) a BSc in biological sciences with a 2.1 pass and (ii) a Masters degree in Entomology. Added advantages include University teaching experience, research experience, proof of leadership and service to the university or community.
