ENHANCE TOURISM RESEARCH CAPACITY

The Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, is seeking to appoint a Chief Economist to lead the operation of Tourism Research Australia (TRA) and provide strategic economic research, advice and analysis.

TRA is responsible for data collection and forecasting relating to national and international tourist activity, visitor satisfaction, and regional profiles, and provides a range of analytical reports on tourism, including the annual State of the Industry report.

The role of the Chief Economist will be to provide leadership for professionally independent economic and statistical analysis, improving the quality and quantity of output necessary to address difficult policy issues facing Australia’s tourism industry today and into the future. This position will report to the Head of Tourism Division and also work with the Departmental Secretary.

The successful candidate will be an applied senior economist with professional standing and strong communication skills as well as the ability to lead and further develop a team. An understanding of the workings of the Australian and State governments and various institutions within Australia will be highly valued. The candidate may come from government, academia, industry or multinational organisation.

The successful candidate will need to have the requisite masters, doctorate or post-doctorate qualifications complemented by extensive applied research experience.
