Intern, Climate & Energy; Energy Transition Forum

The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) is a non-partisan American public policy and grant-making institution dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation between North America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues.

Job Summary:

The Climate & Energy Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) currently seeks an undergraduate or graduate level intern to assist with international energy policy research and general administrative support related to our Energy Transition Forum. The internship will start in early September 2011 and end in late December 2011.

In line with these goals, the German Marshall Fund’s Energy Transition Forum intends to provide a regular venue for open, structured, and fact-based dialogue and debate among select leaders from the private and public sectors about market conditions, policy incentives and frameworks needed for a transition to a secure, sustainable and affordable energy future. The internship will focus primarily on assisting with cutting edge international energy policy research and general administrative support leading to the execution of this innovative and dynamic Forum.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Conduct background research and policy & literature reviews;
  • Edit and contribute to policy-relevant publications and write substantive content for internal and external communications on the Energy Transition Forum;
  • Gather and organize logistical information for events and seminars;
  • Prepare talking points and preparatory materials for Senior Transatlantic Fellow‘s speaking and conference engagments;
  • Provide event support (both planning and on-site logistical support);
  • Complete one long-term project in collaboration with the internship supervisor;
  • Attend and summarize key events at GMF and external organizations for program staff; and
  • Other duties to include database entry and administrative support.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Have a genuine and enthusiastic interest in energy policy, energy systems, and/or energy technologies.
  • Be creative, organized, responsible, and comfortable working independently and as part of a team.
  • Have excellent analytical, writing skills and previous research experience.
  • Be comfortable multi-tasking, and working independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with a strong background in energy studies, green engineering, U.S. and/or European public policy and/or international relations. Recent graduates will also be considered.
  • Ability to multi-task and support several small to medium-sized projects in addition to working on long-term research projects.

Start and length of internship:

Preferred starting date: September 12; exact date can be flexible if necessary.

Preferred time commitment: at least 20 hours per week and at least 3 months (preferably longer).
