Senior Scientific Managers - DNA Pipeline Operations

Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute

Ref: 80975

The closing date for these positions is 23rd September 2011

The Sanger Institute, based south of Cambridge, is one of the world's leading medical research centers funded primarily by the Wellcome Trust. It has built on its success with the major sequencing projects - human, zebrafish, mouse, pig - to now look at the role of genetics in health and disease.

To help in this quest the Institute has established large scale experimental pipelines for DNA analysis as part of an extensive scientific infrastructure: including Sequencing, Genotyping, Sample Management, large scale PCR and others which support and drive significant numbers of projects both internally and externally.

We are now seeking to recruit up to 7 team managers who will have direct management responsibility of approximately 10-15 staff each responsible for delivering scientific services to internal customers. The team managers will be expected to coordinate, manage and shape the operation of current and future DNA pipelines, each focusing on one area. They will foster a culture of tight portfolio and project management to ensure the delivery of high quality DNA based data in a timely manner under rigorous financial control. They will manage day to day delivery to customers including taking the lead on evaluating the pipeline operations and implementing changes to processes and structures to maximise efficiency and effectiveness.

Essential Skills
The ideal candidates will have a track record in operational management of scientific data production, with proven experience of delivering on time and within budget. They will have experience of managing a number of staff and coaching their direct reports to provide a supportive environment. Candidates will also have proven experience in building and maintaining effective relationships with customers. Experience of working within and managing significant change is also essential.

Ideal Skills
Knowledge and a technical awareness of one of the Institute's major pipelines would be an advantage but is not essential.

Other information
We are also looking for a senior manager to whom a number of these team managers will report.

Salary: £36672 to £48459 per annum dependent on experience
