BACKGROUND


The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) was founded in 1948 and brings together more than 1,200 members (States, Government agencies, NGOs and affiliates) and some 11,000 scientists and experts in a unique worldwide partnership. Its mission is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable. Within the framework of global conventions, IUCN has helped over 75 countries to prepare and implement national conservation and biodiversity strategies. IUCN has approximately 1,000 staff, most of whom are located in its regional and country offices while some 180 work at its Headquarters in Gland, Switzerland. The IUCN Caucasus Cooperation Center (formerly operating under the Programme Office for the Southern Caucasus) opened in October 2006. Its mission is to strengthen support for nature conservation in the region by providing a range of services to all interested and engaged actors in the field:
• Access to global nature conservation knowledge
• Promotion of synergies among ongoing and planned activities
• Assistance in identifying gaps and trends in specific sectors
• Facilitation of multi-stakeholder processes
• Communication: global to local and local to global reach.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Biodiversity Projects Coordinator will play an important role in developing and implementing IUCN CCC’s biodiversity conservation programme, working in close cooperation with IUCN’s members and partners.
The Biodiversity Projects Coordinator will, among others, be responsible for the coordination and implementation of bilaterally-funded projects led by the IUCN CCC.
• Assist in the development of IUCN CCC’s biodiversity conservation programme in line with the IUCN overall strategy for the Caucasus, including project design, proposal development, liaising with potential donors, and implementation of projects and formulating appropriate positions and recommendations on biodiversity policies;
• Lead IUCN CCC projects, in particular those dealing with biodiversity conservation and governance;
• Maintain effective and regular communication with the IUCN constituency and partners and represent IUCN in the Caucasus region within the programme scope;
• Communicate the nature and results of the work that IUCN CCC undertakes and represent IUCN CCC at designated regional meetings and conferences, and report on these meetings;
• Contribute and co-operate in internal and external monitoring and evaluation, as well as reporting;
• Other tasks related to IUCN CCC’s overall programme as agreed with the line-manager.

REQUIREMENTS


• • University qualifications in resource management, ecology, environmental policy or similar

• • Significant professional experience in nature conservation preferably in an international environment

• • A good understanding of international biodiversity policy, legislation and agreements

• • Relevant and proven experience in project cycle management, i.e. co-ordinating larger projects, incl. overseeing staff/consultants and managing project budgets and reporting

• • Demonstrated experience in the management of natural resources and/or ecosystems in the Caucasus region

• • Strong fundraising skills including the development of project concepts and proposals

• • Strong research and analytical skills, and an ability to articulate complex issues clearly

• • Strong networking and communication skills and ability to work in different cultural contexts

• • Willingness to travel within the region

• • Fluency in spoken and written English, working level of Russian; fluency in other Caucasian languages an advantage

• • Computer literacy
