Research Assistant, Rafik Hariri Center

The Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East at the Atlantic Council seeks a talented researcher, policy analyst, and writer to assist a dynamic program to advance policies that promote successful democratic transitions in the Middle East and North Africa. The research assistant will provide important research and logistical support to senior fellows and program staff and are encouraged to engage in their own research and publishing in addition to their cooperative assignments.

The Center seeks candidates with demonstrated expertise in the politics and economics of the Middle East and North Africa region through academic and work experience. The position requires a proven aptitude for analytical thinking, superior writing ability, and excellent administrative and communication skills. The position also involves assistance in the preparation and implementation of events related to policy initiatives including high-level speaker events, policy workshops and roundtable discussions. The successful candidate will have an entrepreneurial spirit, communicate effectively, and enjoy the fast pace of building a new enterprise.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide primary research support for senior fellows; engage in projects under the leadership of the director related to topics of interest to senior fellows and priorities of the Center.
  • Assist in drafting various Atlantic Council publications and other writing projects for external publication, including journal articles, policy briefs, and op-eds.
  • Contribute to proposal or grant writing for future research projects
  • Assist in planning and implementation of events related to research projects and serve as rapporteur to task forces and workshops as needed
  • Contribute to Atlantic Council and Hariri Center website and blogs with policy analysis, short articles, and blog postings.
  • Provide logistical and administrative support to senior fellows, including travel arrangements, arranging meetings, and communications and outreach.


Qualifications


Qualifications

  • Demonstrated interest in international affairs and the MENA region.
  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s in a related field, such as Middle East Affairs, International Affairs, or Economics.
  • Strong writing and analytic skills.
  • Technical skills in data management and analysis strongly preferred, HTML and web skills are a plus.
  • Experience living, studying or working in the MENA region is highly desired.
  • Arabic language skills strongly preferred, particularly for reading Arabic media and online research.

The Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East seeks to produce original analysis of the forces transforming the region, as well as policy recommendations for the United States and Europe about how to promote closer and more productive relations with the region. The Hariri Center recognizes the substantial linkages between political and economic affairs, and will develop policy initiatives to promote successful democratic transitions and greater convergence among the Middle East, the United States, and Europe. The Center is dedicated to the memory of the late Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri and his efforts to rise above sectarianism and to promote innovative policies to support economic and political liberalization, sustainable conflict resolution, and greater regional and international integration.
