CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER - Council for Geoscience

The Council for Geoscience (CGS) is one of the National Science Councils of South Africa and has as its mission to provide expert earth-science information and services to improve the management of natural resources and the environment for a better quality of life for all. Its myriad activities include mapping, surveys, environmental impact assessments, seismology, marine geology and laboratory services, to name but a few.

Show us the possibilities by applying for this prestigious position in the Pretoria Head Office, where the scientific and commercial wellbeing of the CGS will rest on your shoulders. Strategic leadership and shrewd financial control will be your daily focuses. Specifically, you will be expected to collaborate with the CGS Management Board to define the CGS vision, and to develop strategies for its achievement, as well as ensure that the Strategic Objectives and Business Plans of the organisation are well monitored and are in line with the national priorities. You will identify measures to assess mineral resources, formulate significant policy proposals at national level and negotiate large country-to-country geoscientific programmes, as well as make presentations and give keynote addresses at prestigious international conferences. As the primary spokesperson and representative for the CGS, you will ultimately optimise the understanding of geosciences amongst South Africans.

Minimum requirements: • A postgraduate degree in Geosciences or related field, and at least 5 years’ experience in a leadership and managerial position (an MSc in an applicable field would be an added advantage) • Proven ability to lead and motivate staff • Demonstrated ability to develop realistic strategies and objectives • A proven track record of excellent achievements in a leadership capacity • Demonstrated ability to engender diversity and strike a balanced environment that encourages growth and learning in the organisation • Working knowledge of and in-depth exposure to geological sciences • Demonstrated excellent communication and negotiation skills • Demonstrated understanding of the South African mining and mineral industry • Demonstrated understanding of Government objectives and policies • Demonstrated understanding of the research imperatives in the field of geosciences.
