JOB TITLE: Co-Editor of Population and Development Review

REPORTING TO: The President

ASSIGNMENT LENGTH: Indefinite

POSITION SUMMARY: Population and Development Review (PDR) is a peer-reviewed journal published quarterly that seeks to advance knowledge of the relationships between population and social, economic, and environmental change, and to provide a forum for discussion of related issues of public policy. The Population Council is seeking a Co-Editor to collaborate with an existing co-editor in providing overall substantive and editorial direction for this journal, and in ensuring its continuing stature and influence in the population field. The Co-Editor will contribute to the selection and editing of manuscripts and other content and oversee the processes of peer-review and production. While this is intended to be a full-time position, part-time appointments will be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. In partnership with the co-editor (and chair of the editorial committee), and other editorial committee members, to ensure that PDR fulfills its strategic commitment to advancing knowledge and policy debate on population and development issues; periodically revisit the journal’s mission and shape its future.

2. Conceptualize and shape the content and scope of each regular issue of PDR to ensure the journal's quality and interest; explore possibilities for book-length supplements on appropriate topics; provide oversight for PDR’s complete production process from submission to publication.

3. Work directly with the editorial staff, the Publications Office, and publisher to ensure the production process meets established timelines.

4. Cultivate relationships with scholars/writers; actively solicit manuscripts that serve the mission and reflect the standards of PDR.

5. Read and evaluate submitted manuscripts and work with authors to revise manuscripts based on reviewers’ comments and the editors’ recommendations for improvement; where necessary, assist with structural editing of manuscripts.

6. In collaboration with the Publications Office, ensure that copy-editing and production-editing continue to be of high quality.

7. Serve as editor of the book review department, entailing search for and identification of suitable new books for review and correspondence with scholars to solicit reviews or review essays.

8. Select materials for the documents and archive sections of PDR.

9. Assist with raising funds for PDR and supplementary issues.

10. Conduct scholarly research and writing, and related professional activities, as other duties allow.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ph.D. in a social science; 10 years of extensive and well-recognized professional experience.

2. Extensive experience editing manuscripts in the social sciences and overseeing editorial and production staffs.

3. Must possess a sense of clear writing, style, organization, and presentation of information

4. Extensive experience conducting research, and a substantial record of publishing influential research in peer- reviewed journals.

5. Demonstrated understanding of scientific and analytic methods, publishing ethics, the peer-review process, editorial policies, policies on authorship, and conflict of interest.

6. Demonstrated ability to skillfully evaluate and edit scholarly manuscripts.

7. Must be able to work collaboratively.

8. Excellent interpersonal and public communication skills.
