General: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is an autonomous, nonprofit making, international scientific organization operating under the aegis of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). More specifically its mission is:

To encourage, support and undertake activities to improve the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of maize and wheat systems in the interest of the resource poor in developing countries.

The position: The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is recruiting a Research Assistant IV based in Addis Ababa, who will be a member of CIMMYT team.

MAIN DUTIES (Terms of Reference)

  • Contributes to the implementation of on-going research projects in Eastern and Southern Africa, particularly in relation to Conservation Agriculture for Smallholder Farmers in Eastern and Southern Africa (CASFESA) and other projects.
  • Contributes in designing and implementing field surveys and other socio-economic research activities.
  • Contributes in designing, implementing, monitoring and supervising Conservation Agriculture demonstration works in project sites.
  • Compiles, analyzes and rigorously document primary and secondary socioeconomic data sets.
  • Contributes in developing research reports, journal articles and policy briefs.
  • Guides, supports and monitors the regional NARES partners in planning and execution of research activities.
  • Pro-actively contributes, develops his/her skills and takes increasing responsibilities in all of the above.
  • Other reasonable duties that may be assigned by your supervisor.

Minimum Requirement:

Education: MSc. Degree from a recognized University in Agricultural Economics or any other related field in Applied Economics.

Experience: At least two years of demonstrated experience in:

  • Designing and implementing surveys in rural settings (preferably household and market surveys; and
  • Management and analysis of large socioeconomic datasets using standard statistical and econometric software (preferably SPSS and/or STATA)

Training: Agricultural economics; agricultural development economics; development economics; resource economics; econometrics; research methods; policy analysis.

Skills:

  • Good econometric skills are essential; combination of good analytical, writing and field work skills; scientific rigor, initiative, ability to work independently.
  • Excellent command of English language (oral & written)
  • Knowledge of computer skill (MS Office, SPSS, STATA).
  • Driving license is an advantage.

Duty Station: Addis Ababa

Grade: Level 2D.

Minimum Gross Salary: Birr 13,388.

Terms of appointment: This position is remunerated on local terms. Initial appointment is (fixed term) for two (2) years subject to a six (6) months’ probation period with possibility of renewal appointment, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
