2012 marks the 90th anniversary of The Chicago Council on Global Affairs. Founded in 1922 as The Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, the Council is one of the oldest and most prominent international affairs organizations in the United States. Independent and nonpartisan, The Chicago Council is committed to influencing the discourse on global issues through contributions to opinion and policy formation, leadership dialogue, and public learning.

The Chicago Council focuses its efforts in two primary areas: 1) developing programs for its members and the public and 2) informing the national discourse on global affairs. The vehicle through which most of the Council’s programs are offered, the Chicago Forum, has from the earliest days of the Council provided a nonpartisan forum for world leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss issues of national and international importance. Today the Council holds more than 125 public and leadership events each year at which both Council members and the public gain insights into pressing domestic and global issues. Equal in importance to the Chicago Forum, but more recent in origin, is the Council’s work on informing the national discourse on global affairs. The Council achieves this end through its studies of American public opinion on foreign policy, as well as task forces, study groups, publications, and conferences on a wide range of issues. Through these twin foci, the Chicago Council contributes fresh insights and perspectives to the formation of opinion and policy both in the United States and abroad.

The next President will succeed Marshall M. Bouton, who has been an outstanding leader for the last 11 years. The President is the organization’s full-time chief executive and reports to the Chairman of the Board of Directors. The 86-member Board is comprised of top leaders in business, academic, and community organizations. The Council has a professional staff of 45 and an annual budget of approximately $9 million. More than 7,000 individuals, corporations, and foundations are members of the Council.
