Senior Programme Officer

Based in International IDEA’s office in Canberra, with a high proportion of time planned to be spent in Myanmar, the Senior Programme Officer will report to the Asia and Pacific Director and will be part of the Asia and Pacific Programme. She/He will also work closely with International IDEA’s headquarters in Stockholm.

This is a fixed term position, with the incumbent required to design, manage and account for IDEA’s projects in Myanmar. In particular the Senior Programme Officer will take the lead in the establishment phase of one of IDEA’s potential future country programmes supporting democratic reform processes. The post holder will be required to develop and maintain positive and effective relations with institutional and other programmatic partners in Myanmar (for example the legislature and the election commission) and with the Myanmar Government and its agencies, IDEA Member States, funders, UN and other relevant interlocutors.

The Senior Programme Officer will be responsible for promotion of dialogue and consensus building at the highest levels with the ability to provide and facilitate expert advice to political actors in Myanmar. Other responsibilities include the supervision of local and international project, financial and administrative consultants.

The functions of this post require a minimum of 10 years’ experience participating in processes of political reform and/or in the implementation of democracy/governance programmes in (or supported by) governmental, inter-governmental or non-governmental organizations. Familiarity with the Myanmar and regional context is essential. Direct experience in management of projects in difficult and challenging environments is also essential.
