Rationale

Programme communications is a very important dimension of UN Women’s work as it directly contributes to positioning of UN Women and aids resource mobilization efforts. Given that Programme Staff often take up the additional role of communications and outreach at the country level, strengthening the capacities of programme staff with respect to communication techniques will no doubt, enhance UN Women’s ability to report and communicate results to partners, donors and the general public.

Strategy

In the above context, based upon country level needs assessment, it is proposed to conduct specialized communications training for staff at Country level focusing on select communication tools and techniques. Country level trainings will also help adapt the corporate communication strategy to the local and national context. The Communications training sessions will be conducted by a UN Women regional communications officer and a media professional or a media practitioner as resource persons.

Objectives:

1. Introduce the corporate communication strategy and increase overall understanding of the importance of communications within the work of programme staff.

2. Deliver 6 key training modules to UN women staff on

a. The importance of communications

b. Photography

c. Flip camera interviews

d. Results based writing

e. Writing for the web

f. Engaging the media

3. Familiarize the staff with existing templates and guidelines.

Deliverables:

Under the direct supervision of UN Women Regional Communications and Outreach Officer, the consultant is required to design six key training modules and conduct training in accordance with agreed and endorsed module description.

She/he is expected to deliver innovative approaches to maximize the effectiveness of this 3-dayworkshop.

The specific tasks include:

• Produce the overall design of training modules and the workshop methodology based on workshop objectives;

• Design the methodology for each workshop module/ session, in consultation with the Regional Communication and Outreach Officer

• Facilitate the workshop itself and deliver the modules, ensuring that it is conducted in an interactive and participatory style which stimulates the sharing of experiences, feedbacks, challenges, hand-on production assignments submitted by participants;

• Produce a brief post-workshop personalized tips and synopsis of workshop.

Duty station:

The workshops will take place in Beijing, China (27 – 31 August 2012). Preparatory days of work should take place in Beijing, China on 27-28 August. The consultant works in consultation with Regional Communications and Outreach Officer. Brief post-workshop synopsis and personalized tips for participants to be shared at the workshops and by email.

Supervisor:

The consultant will report to Regional Communications and Outreach Officer, UN Women East and Southeast Asia Regional Office, based in Bangkok, Thailand.

Qualifications:

1. Minimum of ten years of substantive work experience at international news agencies with focus on politics, foreign affairs, public administration, social justice exclusively in Asia Pacific and ASEAN nations;

2. Minimum three years of experience designing/ conducting/ facilitating workshops for United Nations and/or other international, regional or bilateral development organizations and/or higher educational institutions;

3. Hands-on expertise in designing and implementing a wide range of interactive methods for adult learning;

4. A broad understanding of UN’s development mandate is required. Experience in communications around socially sensitive topics will be an added advantage.

5. Cultural sensitivity and experience moderating workshops of culturally diverse and international groups;

6. Familiarity of Mandarin language is an asset;

7. Native English speaker.

The workshop is to be held in Beijing, China. Applicants are required to submit an expression of interest indicating lump sum fee which includes professional fee, travel and accommodation costs, visa fee for travel to Beijing, China. Expression of interest should be accompanied by your resume and methodology, workshop description related to the aforementioned modules.
