Consultancy - Gender Advocacy Adviser

The Consultant will work alongside the staff of the Half of Society Association with the objective of increasing the capacity of women, especially the poor and most vulnerable.

This consultancy is a step towards supporting civil society in gender mainstreaming, having a good understanding regarding women’s participation in political and social life, combating discrimination against women, and with the aim of addressing gender inequality in Yemeni society.

The successful candidate should have a degree in a relevant field (eg social sciences, gender, human rights), and education/training in specific aspects of gender and development, and in social research and analysis.

A minimum of three years’ experience with an NGO in an advisory support capacity, preferably with umbrella organisations in a developing country, and of working on women’s rights and gender mainstreaming is essential. You should also have proven experience in advocacy and lobbying for the rights of women; in training/facilitation methodologies and direct training ability; of working in a resource poor environment, where access to technology is limited; in developing project/programmes related to women’s rights, and of liaising with a range of different organisations at policy level, including national and international decision-making bodies and legal frameworks.

An in-depth knowledge of gender and development issues, including domestic violence and the political marginalisation of women; a strong knowledge of women’s status in Yemen and of the challenges they face; the ability to transfer skills and knowledge through formal or informal training and skills sharing, and an understanding of the role that NGOs play in national and community development are essential. You should also have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate and work with a wide range of people in a participatory, respectful, collaborative manner, and to enhance effective work relationships; flexibility, problem solving skills and the ability to adapt to a changing and resource poor environment, to approach work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude; excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work on own initiative, prioritise and meet deadlines, and a good command of English and Arabic, both spoken and written.

A personal commitment to mainstream gender in all areas of work; the willingness to undertake road travel in Yemen, and the right to work in Yemen are also required.
